Transfer course/route file from GoogleMaps/MyMaps

Which is the best way to get a course planned in GoogleMaps/MyMaps into the Edge 830?

I tried various options, but I was not sucessful yet.

1. Is there a way to use the GoogleMaps/MyMaps apps to export route files? MyMaps for PC can export courses in kmz-format, but on tours I have only my Android smartphone with me.

2. The 830 does not accept kmz-files but gpx-files. Is there a good Android app to convert kmz to gpx?

3. The easiest way for a transfer would be, to connect the 830 as an USB-host. I tried it unsuccessfull. The 830 seems to not have an USB-host.

4. Is there a wireless transfer option, when travelling without PC (e.g. using tethering or Bluetooth)?

  • Do you have to use Google Maps? If you plan routes on Strava or Garmin Connect or RidewithGPS or EasyRoute you can transfer fairly easily, plus some of them have cycling heatmaps which should make routing more bike friendly.

  • I'll add Komoot to your list... with its ConnectIQ app it is fairly easy to sync rides... works well for me. And for route planning (especially on PC) I haven't found anything better yet.

  • Yeah Komoot is great!

I have bought the world map option for a year.  I'm Wondering if I that will cover the mapping areas that didn't come with the Garmin originally or do I need to get download some other maps on the device?

  • Not tried Komoot, but plotaroute is my current go-to website for route plotting. It's got a cracking set of tools for route planning that have made it indispensable for me now.
