Tracking total mileage on individual bikes?

I have a brand new Edge 830 and am also new to Garmin after having used Polar bike computers for about 15 years.  I've been reading through the forum posts, and I understand that Garmin no longer provides individual bike profiles, instead opting for activity profiles.  But is there a way to track mileage ridden on each of my multiple bikes?  My Polar had an odometer for each bike (I have four bikes) as well as a total odometer for total miles ridden.

If the Garmin uses a sensor pool, and pairs whatever sensor is active when starting a ride, how does it know how many miles I've ridden on my road bike, mountain bike, etc. if the sensor is not linked to the bike?

So basically, is there a way for my 830 to give me a total mileage for each bike?  Or at the very least, for each activity?  (Although I have two mountain bikes that I frequently alternate between, so this wouldn't allow me to track mileage on those two bikes separately.)

  • Add gear to the activity in connect.garmin.com. You can do both bike & other - eg chains, wheels etc. seperately.

  • Yes.  It's a manual operation in GC after you upload the activity.  You can't set a starting mileage so it starts at zero.  You can go back and add previous activities already uploaded to GC to include that mileage.

  • I see that I can create (and name) new activity profiles on the 830.  Can I just create a profile for each bike?  e.g. MTB 1, MTB 2, Road bike 1, Road bike 2, etc.?  Then I just select the activity profile for whichever bike I'm riding.  This would then track total mileage for each bike.

  • This would track mileage for the activity profiles that are named with corresponding bikes. You could also track the mileage using Garmin Gear in Garmin Connect.

  • Yes, except for that last sentence.  It will not track mileage per activity profile on the device.  You will have to select the bike manually in Connect when you upload the activity.

Garmin started doing this some years ago.  It still makes no sense to me as it would be a simple thing to total mileage per activity profile on the device or automatically in Connect.  Another thing they did was get rid of sub categories in GC Progress Summary reports.  You used to be able to at least see total mileage per activity type like, road, mtb, cx, indoor, gravel, etc.  Now all you can see is the total for all of Cycling.  Same for running.

  • No, I think it does!  I did my first ride with my 830 yesterday, after setting up three profiles and naming them after my bikes.  When I go to History > Totals, I can see under my profile named "Sworks 2019" that it shows 8.21 miles.  I'll have to confirm on my next ride that it actually adds to that total.  But I think it works.

  • You are right!  I was not aware of that.  I see the totals for my profiles.  I don't see a way to set a starting mileage, and it's only on the device as far as I can see.

Also new 830 user. Startled this is not an option to edit or set a starting milage. Also once the bike profile name in Strava and activity profile name match it's easy to add the ride with the corresponding bike profile  name in Strava. This is all  documented en provided for in the Strava API. 20 lines of code and puzzeld why this is not available.
