With my old Edge 810, when I'd charge it, it would essentially shut down and turn itself off. With the 830, it basically stays on once I plug it in (even when it is turned off, it powers up). Is there a way to keep it off?

What I've found with the 830 is it will stay switched OFF if you do it in this sequence: 1)Plug it in to a charger first, not a USB port on a computer. 2)Then switch it OFF by long pressing the power button and select the OFF, not the SLEEP, then the charging progress shows on the screen. 3)After it reaches 100% the display turns off and the 830 stays OFF completely. But It will NOT stay OFF if the charging hasn't reached 100% when you unplug it.
So you're saying only use a wall charger, or plug it in to the USB only after I've plugged it into the unit first?
Thanks for the tip. This is a nice feature (unit stays off after reaching 100%). This way I can just leave it on the charger and not worry about manually having to turn off the unit like on my 520.
58teeth - If you plug the Edge into a computer and in mass storage mode, the Edge will not turn off (this is by design). However, if you eject/unmount the device from your computer but leave it plugged into the computer, then the Edge should go into a suspend mode (not Off) after a timeout period.
As for the use with a wall outlet charger, as perlinauto stated, it will turn off after reaching 100% charge. However there may be a rare problem where the battery percentage may not show a full charge. We should have a fix for this in a future update that is scheduled for early July. Garmin-Matthew I tried this, but the unit still stays on. I'm on an iMac (FWIW). I gave it a few hours and checked on it, and the unit remained on.
58teeth - I wonder if your iMac is going to sleep or some other process that causes the Edge to go out of Mass Storage Mode? In that case it would work much like you plugged it into a wall outlet/adapter.
I have a related issue. I turn the Garmin off after a ride. In the car on the way home I plug it in to charge it. This causes it to turn on. Shouldn’t there be an option to not allow this? So I turn it off again. But if I stop the car, say to get gas, when I turn the car back on it powers up again if I don’t notice this when I get home it stays on and the power drains away. Seems like the automatic behavior is causing trouble that could be avoided simply y starting off when powered off?
This keep happening to my Garmin Edge 820 too - I plug it into an external power source with the USB cord, long push the power button, select "Power Off" and it turns off. However the screen doesn't show how much charge the battery has. Then a few seconds later it turns itself on and starts draining the battery as it charges - so it never actually charges fully.
