Is your Edge 830 temperature showing correctly?

My Edge 830 regularly records approx 5-10C higher than actual ambient temperature, and it increases slowly if the Edge isn't moving. So I guess this is reading the internal temp of the Edge rather than ambient temp?

Since a number of metrics are based on this, including it seems e.g. smart alerts for hydration, these tend to be way off. Today a not very taxing 20-mile ride in max 16C weather was recorded on the Edge as mostly in the low 20s, and suggested  2,134 ml  fluid loss, which seems excessive. 1 x 750ml bottle was fine instead of the recommended almost 3 bottles.

  • This has been my experience as well. I was biking in the Utah desert last week, and the 830 was frequently showing over 100 F after stopping and sitting, when the ambient temperature by all other measures was in the low 90s. Definitely seems to be internal temp of the device. But I can see arguments pro and con for keeping it that way....

Last ride I did showed realistic temperature except during a break when the temperature steadily increased. I am not sure about the hydration alert yet, I will need more test rides.

I am wondering why the Edge series is not compatible with the Garmin Tempe (external temperature sensor) which is ANT+ and is compatible with other devices like the Fenix 5. Not sure the Tempe would bring something though ?

  • Fluid loss uses calories and temperature to compute a value, so it will depend to a large extent on how accurate that calorie value is. If you ride with a power meter it should be pretty good. Other methods of estimating a value are less accurate.

What sensors do you have paired with the Edge.

  • If it is left sitting in the sun then the temperature can rise pretty quickly.

I have a powermeter and HR. After some more test I think the Hydration alert is ok for me.

  • It is my understanding that the barometric pressure sensor used in the Edge units includes an integral temperature sensor which is needed to compensated for the temperature dependence of the pressure sensing element.  The intent of the temperature sensor is to measure the temperature of the pressure sensing element itself.  I believe the temperature read by this component mounted on the circuit board inside the Edge is what Garmin uses to display temperature.  This is good for temperature compensating the pressure sensing element, but not for accurately reading outside ambient temperature.

  • When I ride my tandem I have both the 520 and 830 on the bike.  The 830 consistently reads 4F higher than the 520.  The 520's temp. is more realistic.  I hope Garmin would look into correcting this.

  • I've noticed that my new Edge 830 is also showing 7-10F higher than what my 520 would normally show, correlating against the weather app on my phone (Weather Underground).

  • I would also appreciate to have the possibility to use the Tempe sensor. I don't see a reason why I can use it with my Fenix 5x and my Oregon 650 but not with Edge 830.

  • Mine seems to work great. So far it has been right on...
