Is your Edge 830 temperature showing correctly?

My Edge 830 regularly records approx 5-10C higher than actual ambient temperature, and it increases slowly if the Edge isn't moving. So I guess this is reading the internal temp of the Edge rather than ambient temp?

Since a number of metrics are based on this, including it seems e.g. smart alerts for hydration, these tend to be way off. Today a not very taxing 20-mile ride in max 16C weather was recorded on the Edge as mostly in the low 20s, and suggested  2,134 ml  fluid loss, which seems excessive. 1 x 750ml bottle was fine instead of the recommended almost 3 bottles.

  • If you buy a personal weather station the temperature sensor is in the shade. My experience with numerous Edge devices is that they are reasonably accurate on an overcast day. In bright sun, subtract 10 def F. Interpolate in between. The internal temop sensor is there to stabilize the barometer. The info is for your amusement.

  • I’ve got a new 830, running firmware v7.10, and the device temperature reading (the one shown in the screen header, not the weather widget) is wildly high on mine.  I did a ride today where I was completely shaded under a forest canopy, 830 attached to handlebars, and I got a reading as high as 111F, when the actual temp was in the low- to mid-80’s. The unit’s been sitting on a table in my house for an hour now...the sun’s down and the inside temp of my house is 72F, and the 830 is reading 89F.

  • Isn´t the temperature shown in the screen header just the internal temperature of the edge?

  • The temperature in the screen header (and temperature data field)  is from the temperature sensor in the unit.  It does have access to outside air but will be influenced by heat sources in the unit.

In my opinion it isn't the most useful data to look at.  You don't really need the temperature reported by a head unit to tell you if it is hot or cold.  There is a temperature sensor because it comes with the pressure sensor which is used for altitude data.

  • Well.....if you HAVE a sensor.  Make it work correctly.

Various users (almost 3 pages) have reported direct correlation between readings from the 520 (or 810) and the 830 and the 830 is ALWAYS 2 degrees C higher.
    Just fix it.

  • Btw: I use a Garmin (external) tempe sensor with my edge 830 with an IQ data field (CRTTempeField | Garmin Connect IQ)

  • How is it not the most useful data to look at?
Don't you need a temperature sensor to know exactly what the temperature is outside?
Nor is it necessary for the device to show the speed at which you are going, because you can already see with your own eyes if you are going slow or fast?
It is also not necessary to know the altitude you are at or the accumulated altitude, because you can simply look at the edge of the road and look down at the mountain and get an approximate idea, or simply see if your legs hurt or not and If they hurt, it means that you've gone up a lot and if they don't hurt, then isn't the rise that bad?
Nor is it necessary for the device to display the average speed (you can get a rough idea in your head about that)?
You also don't need to know your current heart rate because you can simply put your hand on your chest and notice if the heart rate is fast or slow?
    Really?
Every time I read comments like this, it makes me even more angry that you haven't cheated by buying the device junk.

  • The built in sensor is only built in to calibrate the barometer. The barometric sensor is INSIDE the device so the temp sensor has to read the inner temp.

Thats for all Garmin devices the Same. To be honest: I can’t understand why Garmin gives us access to that data point or even why they write it into the .fit file. The only time when watches are accurate for example is when you are swimming.

  • These GPS bike computers are sold on the functions of telling you where you are and how fast you have gone or are travelling, and the navigation. That is why I bought one. Nowhere are they sold on accurate temperature readings. Temperature is not mentioned in the literature apart from the list of available data fields.

To get accurate temperatures these devices would cost way more than people would pay for them due to the calibration required. People would probably still complain if the displayed temperature was accurate because it didn't match some other device (which is uncalibrated).

You also have idea how inaccurate the temperature reading is on your device unless it has been compared with a known calibrated thermometer in the same conditions after being left long enough for the readings to stabilise.

Temperature numbers from weather stations are also very specific. They are shade temperatures and care is taken to make sure the nothing in the environment apart from the air temperature affects the reading.

If the Garmin was accurate the number would only be valid in similar conditions.

There is no point getting angry about a minor feature not related in any way with the core functions not being quite accurate. If the core features were poor that would be a reason to be upset but those work well in my experience. Yes, it would be nice if the temperature number was guaranteed accurate but that is not going to happen.

It would be best for Garmin to remove the temperature display really.

I have mixed thougt about that. First of all, this info is missleading a lot of people, because they think, it is displaying the weather temperature, but it is (only) the temperature of the internal sensor. I don´t know, if there is a real reason for displaying it there, what is the benefit for the user to see the internal temperature?

To be sure, we are talking about the temperature in the header (pic below)?

But for me, even the weather functionality (gcm/handy connection required) sucks, because it seems that gcm is taking the weather from the next airport? I am located in Germany, Oldenburg and the weather is displayed for Germany, Bremen. This is about 60 km away from my current location! Have I missed a setting?
