Where to download: Routable cycling map of US, Version 2019.10

Hi guys,

I am setting up my new Garmin 830 and see there's an initial update of the Routable Cycling Maps for the United States available to download.  Under 'Details' it shows the file is 7.5 GB and will take over 3 hours to download on my slow ISP.  Is there a way I can download the file from a site and copy it onto my machine at home so I can use a faster, public wifi somewhere and not wait 3+ hours for the download to occur?

Thanks,

Sean

  • Actually now I can’t seem to download them at all since my wifi was interrupted during my attempt to download.  Not sure what to do now-bummer.

  • In my experience, that 3 hr time is a rough worst-case estimate and includes the time needed to download the file and copy it to the Edge.  I believe copying to the Edge is the bottleneck, not usually ISP speed.   It also includes the time it takes for the Edge to digest the new map once it receives it.  This happens after you downloading to the Edge is complete and the Edge powers up.  The map updates I did happened much quicker than 3 hrs.  I wasn't paying close attention, but maybe 20 minutes total?

I suggest trying again.  If you're using a laptop, you might go somewhere with reliable internet.  Failing that, someone here should be able to provide you with a map file and instructions on how to install it.  It'll still be a big file you'll have to download.

  • The only issue with copying will be with the POI/Address map as that is locked and can only be unlocked using Garmin Express to install it. Just copying it the Edge will not unlock it. The DEM and Routing maps are not locked so those will be OK.

  • Can you be good enough to explain what each map does, and which is which? When I go to Map Information within an Activity Profile (I'm on 3.20, fully-synced), I see:

    AMR Standard Basemap NR

Garmin Cycle Map Amer, North 2019.10

Garmin DEM Map North America 2019.10

Garmin Geocode Map North America 2019.10

Garmin Cycle Map Amer, Central 2019.10

I presume I need to keep all of these enabled, but it would be lovely to understand each one a bit better.

Plus, I'd love to be able to match up each one with its file name when I go to Windows explorer. Two are pretty obvious from their file names, but the other three I'm not certain about:

    gmapprom.img (about 3.87 gb)

gmapdem.img (about 2.29 gb) (I presume this is the DEM map)

    gmapgc.img (about 982 mb)

    gmapprom2.img (about 45mb)

gmapbmap.img (about 7mb) (I presume this is the Basemap)

Many thanks in advance. This information should be tremendously helpful in keeping us tweakers from deleting or disabling the wrong files/maps!

  • Thank you.  I reconnected at home with my 'less than ideal' internet speed and it resumed the download.  It did take a couple hours, but it completed the download successfully so I'm now up to date.  I'm all good now.

    Sean

  • Cycling Map America North = gmapprom

DEM map = gmapdem, contains elevation data

Gecode map = gmapgc = POI, addresses etc

Cycling Map America South = gmapprom2

Basemap = gmapbmap = High level view, not much detail

  • Hello, do you know if this maps can be renamed? How can i have more maps? For example, stock maps, south america cycling map + topo Chile + Topo andes.

  • Didn't realize we also got South America at the same time as North America. Surprised, though, that it's only 45 mb. I presume I can disable the map unless I'm there?

  • You can name additional maps anything you want. I would avoid special characters. You can also rename the maps that are loaded by Garmin.
