Wrong right-turn signal in roundabouts

My new 830 shows wrong turn signals whenever a roundabout comes along. Typically when the route goes on straight ahead (e.g. 2nd exit) it will prompt me to turn right, which is totally confusing. This happens all the time.

Maps: Garmin Europe (Switzerland)

Questions:

a) is this expected behaviour? (I hope not)

b) is there a way to report map errors/updates to Garmin?

c) should I just switch to OSM? (haven't tried it yet)

Any help is appreciated! This is my first Garmin device...

  • Are you using text turn instructions or the map pop up for turn instructions?

For the map pop-up it should show a white arrow for the path to take around the roundabout to the required exit.

If you are using the text prompts I can see that it might do what you are observing in that you are making a right turn on to the roundabout and then another right turn off the roundabout.

Garmin uses OSM maps so switching maps may not change anything except you might get a more up-to-date version.

  • How does it work when you go to a country like Australia where people ride on the left side of the road and apparently go around the traffic circles the opposite way.  Does the Garmin adjust to the location to show you the path around and also give you the right navigation prompts?

  • I've not tested it in the UK, Japan, Australia, India or other countries that drive on the left, but I believe it should take that information into consideration. Maybe someone from one of those locations could confirm that it does handle that correctly.

  • Thanks for your reply.

    Edit:

This is not entirely correct - verified answer is that Garmin map is broken (i.e. does not work for me); switching to another OSM map resolved the issue (see verified answer below).

    Old:

So this is expected behaviour then. I am amazed how Garmin (being a seasoned gps manufacturer and all) is unable to show an upcoming roundabout and indicate the proper exit. Even my Wahoo Bolt can do this!

I don't always want to use map popups or even the map screen. The first is clunky and the latter defeats the purpose of having such a capable device with multiple screens.

Is there a way to submit feature requests to garmin? This really irks me... close to spoiling the device for me. Because it's stupid.

    Thanks again.

  • It works fine in the UK.  The maps tell the device what side of the road you drive on.

  • Garmin units can correctly navigate roundabouts.  They should tell you the number of the exit to use.

For map errors edit the OSM map yourself and correct them.  When Garmin updates their maps your edits should be incorporated.

I just got a 830 and tried out the Garmin supplied map.  I had some strange prompts at roundabouts too.  I have since put on a non Garmin map also based on OSM data and everything was fine.  Looking at the OSM data directly showed no issues where I noticed them so any navigation prompt problems would be down to how Garmin created their map.

Try a map from a different source and see if things are better.  When you use a different map remember to disable the Garmin ones.

  • Thank you for this - I almost thought I was going nuts. I will open a ticket with Garmin support and try an alternate map.

I wish they would properly test their stuff before release.

  • Ive created a map using OpenStreetMap for Hong Kong and southern China (Shenzhen, etc.).  Will this be able to distinguish between the directions of navigation from one side of the border to the next?

  • If the Hong Kong section was created using the flag to say drive on the left and the mainland China section was created using the flag  to say drive on right then yes.
