Wrong right-turn signal in roundabouts

My new 830 shows wrong turn signals whenever a roundabout comes along. Typically when the route goes on straight ahead (e.g. 2nd exit) it will prompt me to turn right, which is totally confusing. This happens all the time.

Maps: Garmin Europe (Switzerland)

Questions:

a) is this expected behaviour? (I hope not)

b) is there a way to report map errors/updates to Garmin?

c) should I just switch to OSM? (haven't tried it yet)

Any help is appreciated! This is my first Garmin device...

  • As an additional observation, if you go off course when navigating and have the unit set to not recalculate eventually it tells you to do a U-turn.

On my Australian unit, the icon showing for U-turn suggesting turning 180degrees to the left, not right as we should.

So, there's more fundamental problem than roundabouts. For Australia at least, I think Wongataa is correct. Garmin have stuffed up the underlying map data :-(

  • This still seems to be a problem in the UK where we drive/ride on the left side of the road and go clockwise around roundabouts.

This photo of my EDGE 830 (firmware version 9,4) is incorrectly taking me counterclockwise to the third exit rather than clockwise to the second.

It also seems to be creating the route down the opposite side of the road - I will need to find a well separated dual carriageway to verify this.

  • What maps are you using?  The latest Garmin maps?  Have you tried 3rd party maps to see if they have the issue?

  • I'm just using the Garmin maps - ha e not tried others.

  • It will be a map error causing the issue.  The side of the road and which way you go around roundabouts is set in the map.  The base OSM data is correct.  You could report the issue to Garmin as it is a problem with their map.

  • I would check the route planning first. It happens to me occasionally when I plan a route, it will plot the route round the roundabout the wrong way.

What I find causes it is if I am plotting the route and I click on the right hand side of the road at the opposite side of a roundabout, I'm in the UK and drive on the left, then it plots me to go around the wrong side of the roundabout . When I see it happen, I delete what I have just done, and redo it by clicking on the left side of the road on the other side of the roundabout and it plots it right. But, it does not always do it and it is hard to recreate.

Looking at the "jpg", the route has been plotted around the wrong side of the roundabout and it is not the Edge itself telling you to go around the roundabout the wrong way.

I have just done a few UK events where I have been routed the wrong way so it is a quiet common error.

  • The route planning was done in the Garmin Connect app on my mobile phone before being sent to the Edge 830. You can see from this additional image that the previous routing waypoint was at 11.6 miles and the next one is near 15, while the roundabout is at mile 14

Whether it is Garmin Connect or Garmin Edge determining the wrong way around the roundabout, it is still a Garmin issue. Nowhere do a see a setting for "drive/ride on left side of road"

  • Nowhere do a see a setting for "drive/ride on left side of road"

You won't see that setting.  It is a setting used when creating the maps themselves.  The map determines which side of the road is used.  I would try a third party map and see what happens.  They are freely available form https://extract.bbbike.org/.  Choose a latin garmin format.

If the track goes around a roundabout the wrong way it shouldn't matter if you use the Garmin's turn by turn directions as when you do that the Garmin goes along the route and compares it to the maps in use.  It then creates it's own directions based on the route and the maps and it can't go around a roundabout the wrong way (if the map is correct) so the Garmin generated directions will go around the roundabout the correct way.
