Garmin Edge 830 Maps

So my unit came loaded with standard NA maps. I currently live in the EU, and will for the next few years, hence I would really like the EU map set. So....I downloaded said map set and went to install it....there is not enough room on the unit to accomodate both EU and NA maps. Seriously how could this be the case. Garmin reccommends not deleting the resident maps on the unit. That makes sense. Is there any way I can ge th e EU maps on board? Any bloatware or anything I can get ride of to free up the space for the EU map set?

You have a couple of options.

1) Remove the US maps form the device. You can copy the map files to a computer and keep them there in case you want to put them back on.

2) Don't get maps for all of Europe, just for the area you are in.

How do you go about breaking the EU maps up? I have the EU map from Garmin, but it is a single file. Are you talking about a different map loading program? Any reccomendations?

So the 830 doesn't have an external SD card like the 800?

What EU map did you get. The Cycling maps are broken up into Western and Eastern regions?

Don't use the Garmin maps. You can easily get OSM based maps (just like Garmin's) for any specific region of the planet you wish to. This way you can just get maps of the area you are in and the file size will be lower.

I create my own maps from OSM data and my one of Great Britain (where I live) for my Edge is less than 500MB.

Ah. So you have to choose map sections that fit on the device. Is there a recommended size?

OT: Has anyone figured out how to get an email or alert when someone replies to your post here?

Which file do you save to remove and achive the US map ??

The maps have .img file extensions. The file names should let you know which are the North America maps, they will probably have NA in the name. There is also a worldwide basemap and a DEM elevation map on the unit. You can leave them alone.

So Wongataa is only partially correct - there is more than one file extension for the original preloaded maps, at least those native to Garmin. It is best to use the procedure put out by Garmin to get this right. As for what maps you choose to use in the place of those you are deleting, that is a personal preference. There is nothing wrong with the Garmin maps. I use the EU version with no problems. It is important to note that whatever maps came preloaded on your device, Garmin express will notify you when there are updates to those maps and when they are ready to push via Garmin express. Obviously if you are not using NA maps (as is my case for the time being), you simply don't push that update. When you are ready to go back to the native maps that came on your device, you can simply delete the map files you no longer need on the unit, then push the update from Garmin express.
