Huge .fit file size

It was my first ride out with the 830 today and on finishing it froze (or was operating incredibly slowly). I restarted the device, hooked it up to my laptop and found the .fit file of the activity was 32 MB?!

Does anyone know why this could be and how i'd go about uploading it to Garmin/Strava etc as its obviously way too big.

Not the best start to the new unit.....

  • Any chance you could post the file here or on a file sharing site such as Dropbox?

  • Where you navigating at the time and if so did the unit perform a number of recalculations?

    Hi,

Yes to both - I was trying out the navigation during the ride. I'm certain it's down to user error somewhere, I just want to know where I went wrong and how to avoid it in the future.

I've attached a zip of the .fit file

    Thanks a lot

  • Does your unit have maps on it for the region you were riding in? I'm would assume so, but wanted to check. Check that the maps are enabled.

I spoke with Garmin and they are aware that sometimes this can happen when navigating and are looking into the issue.

There is nothing that you can do to control if this does or does not happen, apart from disable turn instruction generation, which is not really an option if you need navigation guidance.

I'm currently processing your file and will post it once I have stripped out the data you don't need.

Your course has a lot turns in it, nearly 1,000 turns.

Yes it has all the maps for my region on the unit.

I do a lot of Audax and long distance ultra rides so navigation is pretty vital.

Wow, 1000 turns! I created and imported the route from Garmin connect, the first time i've done this (i usually use a third party site like Ride with GPS). Maybe i did something wrong there as i've never had issues before.

    Really appreciate your help, thanks!

  • I don't think you did anything wrong. there is some strange combination of events that can cause the nav operation to write excessive amounts of data to the FIT file

    Try uploading this file

    Thanks very much!

I'll keep an eye on it when navigating from now on, see if i can identify the strange combination of events!

Hello, same thing happened to me. Started a course, played a lot with settings including enabling/disabling various maps as navigation didn't give me turn by turn text messages. I'm pretty sure settings were ok to show these. On the map it was showing the course, but there were no messages suggesting turns etc. On other screens it was showing blank black rectangle at the bottom with no text. The course was created in Garmin Connect Web. The end result was 57MB .fit file (attached) after 3h ride. Hopefully they will fix this issue soon. In the meanwhile - can you please advise how to fix the .fit file? Many thanks.

  • If you can post the file to a file sharing site such as dropbox I can strip out the nav_events that are causing the file to be so large. I don't think you can post a file of that size here.

Thanks, I did upload the file in my comment, not sure if it showed for you. I have now uploaded it to dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/a8smafcns2pkhc6/2019-06-04-10-25-42.fit?dl=0
