Navigation while running?

Hello,

I am going to stay training for a Xterra. The routes for the ride and run have been published. So I'm thinking of getting the Edge to upload the route to for training for the bike route. I am just wondering if I could also use the Edge to navigate for the running route. I have another fittness watch for the speed and heart rate, so I am not worried about the recording the run. it is 100% the navigation.

Any thoughts? I have read the mixed reports about using the bike monitors to record runs, so I am not looking at this.

  • There is no reason why you couldn't use an Edge unit to navigate a running route.  It won't care what mode of transport you are using when following a pre planned route.

  • Unfortunately the Edge devices are not designed for running. I would recommend Multisport Wearable. Many have the ability to follow a route, course, or on device mapping.

Using an Edge Series Device for Running Activities

  • Yeah.  It'll navigate on a run just as it would if cycling.  It won't know you're not on a bike.  Of course it will record your track and HR too.  What would be missing is running specific metrics that you might want to see.   I don't believe pairing with a foot pod is possible, though IDK specifically about the 830, just the 820 and other cycling specific Edge units.  Check out the DCRainmaker website for more specific info on the 830 and other sports tech devices.

  • That what I thought. I already have another device for recording my running stats. It is the mapping part that I'm interested in. The local Xterra race has published the running and cycling routes. Was looking to practice them so need a good mapping device. Also I want to follow some friends cycling routes. So this is the way to go for me. Thanks for the reply.

I think that trying to naviage using a watch while on a mountain bike isn't the best idea. Which is why I didn't look at a muilt-sport device.

    • I have the same need, to use my Edge (1030 in my case) just to navigate while running. Would be great if a simple mode to lock the screen while navigating is supported.
  • While recording a ride (or run), pressing the power button locks the screen. You can still scroll between screens. If the device is paused or not recording the power button sends the device to sleep.

  • If the EDGE 830 is in a pocket on the back (while running) or attached to the shoulder straps of the backpack (when hiking), you could also use it for RUNNING or HIKING, so HIKE and RUNNING PROFILE can also be selected!

Now it's edge 830 use only for cycling, and when loading a track on Strava I have to manually change the activity from CYCLING to RUNNING. Please fix firmware so that I will have the option to choose RUNNING or HIKING in the PROFILES. Just as a mountain bike can move up or down left or right and the thing works, it would of course work when walking and running; the same moving. However, I agree, it can't work if I have edge 830 it in my hand or on my arm, because it is constantly moving back and forth!

I WOULD BE VERY THANKFUL TO YOU TO REPAIR THE SOFTWARE !!! Best Regards DAVID
