Edge 540 elevation errors. Altitude dropped while standing still. Overcorrected as soon as started moving again.

So I have a fairly new 540 that replaced a 520 - the one with the poorly designed cable interface.  The 520 stopped charging. Anyway, after the problem with the 540 rebooting itself every 35-40 minutes on a ride got corrected the problem with elevation data being wildly inaccurate remains.  Yes, the port is clean and I didn't stick anything in there or use compressed air on it - it is basically as it came out of the box six weeks ago and I'm using the new stem mounts that came with it.

It typically gets the climb data for a ride 1.5x-2.5x actual.  What I noticed today was that while I was stopped and taking pictures for 3-4 minutes, the recorded altitude dropped about 125 feet.  While I wasn't moving.  Then when I got going again, the road dropped about 30 feet down and became pretty much level for a mile or so.  The 540 recorded a 250 foot climb in that interval.

Yes, I can go in and correct the data - and it's actually pretty amusing the push from Garmin Connect to Strava, Strava throws out the data and uses their own automatically about half the time - but for the coin I dropped on this thing it is mildly annoying.

I have a ticket open on the reboots and the elevation issue from about three or four weeks ago so I'll probably get back on the phone when I have a couple of hours I don't know what to do with.

All of this is a long winded way of asking if anybody with more experience has any ideas how to make the stupid thing work like it is supposed to.

Thanks

  • The issue you are seeing should be resolved with the most recent software update. Based on what I am seeing the software on your device is up to date, are you continuing to see these issues on your device?

  • The issue happened at the 28.34 release level.  I did try to recreate the issue a couple of days later, it did not reoccur, but the device still reported the total altitude gain about 1.5x actual.  For example, on one stretch of that ride it is virtually dead level and the device was reporting elevation gains and losses of 75-100 feet repeatedly.  That issue remains and is fairly consistent.  On the other hand, starting and ending the ride at the same point (within a couple of feet) no longer reports that the start and end points are several hundred feet higher or lower than each other.
