Edge 540 force restart during activity

Hello,

I was on a 2+ hour ride today and all of a sudden my edge 540 decided to crash and reboot itself after around 25 minutes. It returned to the activity in pause but missed a chunk of data and took a while to reconnect to my power meter pedals. The same thing happened around 3-4 more times which was pretty frustrating. Any idea what could be going on?

  • What is your software version? The 1050 / 1040 / 840 forums are full of users reporting these issues, (multiple crashes / re-boots /  freezes / re-starts per ride, missed data in record, failure to reconnect sensors after disconnect), mostly since 28.20.

  • is any CIQ app installed? or any 3rd party maps? Edge storage: Debug folder, and what is in the err_log.txt

  • I am experiencing the same issue. I am on an Edge 540 running 28.20.
i just posted a thread with specifics but its being reviewed for spam, which is hilarious. I had the Ciq trailforks app installed and suspect that may be the issue.

    Here is my log.

    File Name: 0:/Garmin/Debug/EventLogs//00000014.TXT

Mod note: , your post was flagged and placed in the moderator's queue, so I converted your log to the attached txt file.

  • Thanks for all the replies! I'm currently running 28.20 with no CIQ apps installed surprisingly. Here's what my err_log.txt says:

  • I am also on an edge 540 running 28.20 and it started crashing and rebooting itself last week on me just after a software update and setting up crash detection.

  • I am also on an edge 540 (non solar) running 28.20. I've only had it about 3 weeks now and it started crashing and rebooting itself last week on me just after a software update and setting up crash detection.

  • Adding my 'me too' to this thread. Edge 540 (28.20) crashed and rebooted 8 times during today's ride alone. Maddening... So what's the fix, Garmin?

  • I think a work around is to clear the temp files after each ride. In doing so I have had some success in the device not crashing/ rebooting every ride. I made it 3 hrs today without a reboot and an hour yesterday (the full ride).

Sample size is way way too small to declare victory on that, but it can't hurt to try.

  • +1. Every day edge 540 freezing at random moment. It's started since installing 28.20

  • Same here today - must have reset 7 or 8 times over the course of 66 miles. Restarted the unit and firmware version 28.33 got installed. Lets hope this has addressed the issue.
