Edge 540 keeps dropping Garmin HRM

Seemingly random. Edge drops Garmin HRM for a few seconds, reconnects, and works again for a while. Rinse repeat. Edge reports that the battery in the Garmin HRM is "OK".

This has only been happening the last 2 weeks. The Garmin HRM has been working fine for 9 months. Do I replace the HRM battery in spite of it reporting OK? Or is Edge 540 the culprit?

  • Which HRM are you using? Garmin has several. It's likely the battery; especially if you're using the HRM Pro or Pro Plus. These are two of the best HRMs available but that green battery icon that reports OK is useless. To be honest you should have immediately changed the battery to verify that that's "the culprit."

  • I finally sorted my Garmin HRM. It was a faulty/worn out strap. There are 4 sensors pads on the strap. The two inner pads are resistive connected to the module. The closer to the module, the lower the resistance. The two outer pads appear to be capacitive coupled. One pad measured 0.1 nF to the resistance pad, but varied, the other pad measured 0.4 nF to the resitance pad. A new strap is 0.2nF both sides, and works perfectly. My old strap was 10 months old, used 4 times a week, and (hand) washed after every ride. Maybe I overdid the washing.
