Edge 540 crashes, not saving activity, reboots, and many more...

Hi
I previously reported a problem with my 540, but as far as I can see, nothing has been fixed in subsequent software versions. I’m extremely disappointed with how this device works. After what happened last weekend—when the device decided it would be a good idea to freeze and delete the entire race track of over 1000 km from an ultra cycling race—this is the last time I will ever use a Garmin device in any race.

I don't know who develops this software, but the 540 is the worst device I’ve ever used. Not only does it, for some unexplained reason, recalculate the uploaded GPS track (even though re-routing is turned off), but the navigation is sluggish, as if it were running on decade-old hardware. To make matters worse, during the race it can randomly reset itself at any moment.

I had previously let it slide when it occasionally crashed while saving a workout, but this time—after fighting for 34 hours to secure first place in an ultramarathon, only to end up without a saved route—is just too much.

I always believed Garmin devices were supposed to be stable. What you’ve created is anything but. A useless piece of plastic that costs as much as a mid-range phone, packed with features nobody needs, yet incapable of simply loading a route, recording a ride, and uploading it to the system.

So thank you very much for the experience, but I never intend to use Garmin devices again. It’s not worth the frustration, especially when there are alternatives available.

  • Yeap that's happened to my in today traing. GEdge 540 save ride, but without most GPS data. Earlier twice lost all sensors. After last update 540 is far more slower than previous 530. Long step back Garmin.

  • Not only does it, for some unexplained reason, recalculate the uploaded GPS track (even though re-routing is turned off),

If this is occurring then you likely have “Turn Guidance” (TG) enabled (Navigation, Courses, (Three vertical dots top-right of courses screen, Turn Guidance = Enable/Disable

if you just want to follow the course line then TG is not needed and greatly reduces the load on the processor/memory and thus reduces risk of crashes etc. it won’t do a long initial course “calculation” and thus won’t do any re-calculation, both of which are prone to problems and crashes.

I do a lot of longer rides and following the course line is enough for me, augmented maybe with a few custom course points to break up the course into stages ending at feed / rest / sleep stops

  • Agreed. I've had a few dozen Garmin devices in a row, Fenix, Edge, Descent, and more, and the 540 is by far the worst piece of consumer hardware I've ever tried to use. Just today I tried to do a ride, and the route (created in Strava as usual) had no map data displayed. Then, my power meter kept asking to reconnect, no matter if I accepted or declined. Ad infinitum, this software team should be wholescale fired.
