Garmin Connect (iOS) battery drain

I observed, that during ride with Edge 540, my phone battery drains a lot. Edge is paired to iPhone 13 Pro. Today after 3.5h ride, the Connect app consumed 32% of battery.
I was not using LiveTrack or GroupRide.

Can I change some settings to mitigate that? Or, do I have to disconnect Bluetooth before ride?

  • Unless there some other reason you need have the app running during your ride, switch it off. If Bluetooth is on you will still get call and text message notifications.

  • I checked that today. Before ride, I closed the connect app on phone (actually, I closed all open apps) and still got significant battery usage. It seems, that there is a background worker process that cannot be killed (similar to the e-mail or whatsapp - even if you close the app, it keeps working in the background and receiving messages).

I have a suspicion that it may have something to do with alerts functionality - reporting and receiving them is an online function, requires data connection and GPS usage.

  • You can also prevent the GC app from using mobile data to test that idea.  On your phone, go to Settings, Apps, Connect and toggle mobile data off.
