Random disconnect and reconnects with Edge 540 and Varia RVR315

I have a new Garmin Edge 540 with the latest firmware, 21.18, and a Varia RVR315 with the latest firmware, 3.18.

When using the Edge 540 with the Varia RVR315, the Varia will often disconnect and then reconnect automatically once or twice during a ride. This will happen within a few short moment. The “Radar Disconnected” message will appear, then followed by a “Radar Connected” message. It’s not clear that there is a pattern. Often, I believe it is associated with riding alongside another rider with a Varia (this is not conclusive but seems to be the case). This Edge 540 was setup from the factory new, i.e., the Varia and other sensors were added and connected from a clean install. Also, this Edge 540 replaced an Edge 520 with this same Varia RVR315, where this issue never occurred on the Edge 520.

I had experienced a similar problem with an Edge 840 Solar and the Varia RVR315 on another setup, until I replaced the RVR315 with a RTL515. In this case, I did not have any problems with the disconnect and reconnect.

There are many threads and discussions on the Varia radar disconnects. The majority of these have no answer.

What’s going on? Has anyone experienced this or found a resolution?

  • I have the same issue w/ my Varia RVR315.  I get multiple 0:FC error messages, followed by an eventual disconnect.

I spoke w/ support and they confirmed it is a software issue and "the engineers are currently working on a fix".  Was also informed that since it is software, a replacement RVR315 would likely experience the same issue.

I don't see any pattern to this.. it occurs when riding alone or in group rides.  Generally fails later in a ride, but not always. Mine is mounted off the rear seat and well clear of any obstacles.

Hopefully the fix will actually show up.  I did notice for another unit on the support page there was a replacement policy for it having the same error message I'm receiving.

  • I do not always get 0:FC messages, but it sometimes happens. In this case, the symptom is a disconnect message, then followed by a connected message. i.e., like a quick disconnect and reconnect. So infuriating this did not occur on my older Edge 520.
