All activities show Base as primary benefit

I have been using the Edge 540 for the last month and have logged at least one activity nearly every day over that period, so there is sufficient data logged to establish a normal load range. However, nearly every ride I have done shows the primary benefit to be "base" and low aerobic. Even doing sprint interval workouts where my power is zone 6/7 for 15-30 seconds, with 5-10 min warm-up/cool-down, so no excessive Z2 tails. I ensured that my FTP and LTHR/Max HR were set correctly on the device as well.

I am trying to determine why I am not getting any anerobic or high aerobic as the primary benefit on these rides, particularly when doing more intense sprint or sweet spot workouts.

  • You haven't mentioned anything about a heart rate monitor in your post.

  • Yes, I have been wearing either a Garmin or Wahoo HRM on each ride, so there are both power and HR metrics connected to each ride activity.

  • That eliminates the most obvious issue. Other than checking the settings are correct in the Garmin Connect App, I haven't got any other suggestions.

  • I was using an Edge 530 for the last years. Low Aerobic, High Aerobic, and Anerobic were almost always in the target zone. I dropped and broke my Edge 530 2 weeks ago and replaced it with an Edge 540. In the last 2 weeks, using the Edge 540, for the same cycling routes I've been using for years, I've not had ANY High Aerobic benefit. I suspect the Edge 540 calculates differently from the 530.

  • I rode one of my regular routes yesterday, and pushed HARD. Third day in a row on the bike, but it all felt great. Edge 540 agreed, with primary benefit Tempo, and High Aerobic scored a 210 point increase. Stil not in the Optimal range, but better. So it does work.
