Garmin, thanks for ruining my ride!

Edit:

Had a chat with Garmin support re this behavior.

In conclusion, it appears that all came down to one setting: Auto Start an activity vs Manual Start.

I had the Timer set to Auto Start (don't ask me where this setting is... deep in the Activity options somewhere!), which basically is supposed to start Timer, Distance, etc. when you reach 6mph speed.
However, it seems that's not happening! So I started the ride under the impression the ride/activity should start in Auto mode. And totally forgetting about this Start button!

Apparently this option doesn't work as designed, and you still need to push the Start button!

Original message below:

Admittedly, I'm new to this device. Using Strava (paid) for the past 3 years without a hitch.

Got this device hoping to stop relying on Strava and having maybe a visual motivator when cycling. With Strava, I tend to leave my phone in my seat bag and don't care about real time data.

The first two rides, out of the box, no settings changed, Edge worked fine. Small discrepancies vs Strava, nothing major. Obviously, still using Strava at the same time, as a backup.

Before the third ride, I decided to upload a few favorite routes from Strava, thinking that while doing the same routes with Edge, the data will be similar as if using Strava. Then, sync the ride to Strava, for historical purposes (segment times, route times).

Starting the ride, Edge on, I start getting navigation alerts: turns, traffic, etc. Okay, I ride maybe 1/2 mile, these alerts still popping up. Even if I was on a straight street, common to most of my routes. Didn't pay too much attention. After about 1.5 miles, taking a turn, these alerts start showing like every 5 seconds! Detours, recalculation, etc. And that went on for the whole duration of the ride, 2.5 hours!

You can imagine the level of frustration! Not mentioning each alert associated with the constant beeps!

Thinking the behavior was due to some sort of automatic route picked by the device, I start looking into settings. Which in themselves are totally confusing (naming, location, etc.), and on top, not similar on the device and the Connect app. If the app is built with the goal of making the setup easier, there's a lot of work to be done! Same level of confusing settings, the UI/interface is rather un intuitive, etc.

So, I went into both the app and device and turned off most of the navigation related settings. Big mistake! Apparently there are some underlying connections between everything labeled as "navigation" and basic functions such as Timer, Distance, Ascent.

Today, 5min into the ride, realizing something is not right (only heart rate, time of day and instant speed displaying on the base screen) I stop and start switching back some navigation settings. Nothing happens after spending 1/2 h pushing buttons and more buttons. Turn on Strava, sync my HRM, continue ride.

After another stop to try to fix the device, out of frustration, I decided to reset it! Oh no, this is not a "normal" reset! You'd think this turns the device to the same state as out of the box. Turn it back on, scan the code to sync to Connect, a few more steps and standard settings... stil nothing! Same display, or lack of it, as before!

Garmin, explain please! I really don't need a $350 digital watch when cycling!

  • Hi hope you solved your problem. I think you have to give you more time to learn and understand how Garmin works. It's difficult understanding in some rides.

  • Thx for your reply. Definitely need more time to learn all the details and quirks of this new ecosystem.

  • Garmin, explain please!

I agree that Garmin devices & software are not intuitive or easy to understand, they could and should be, those of us who have grown up with them over many devices, software versions and YEARS of use forget the time taken to master (not possible) or at least learn what works and what does not.

I have found the VELOGPS YouTube videos very helpful, especially the Navigation demos and data screen setup ones. They don’t have all videos for all devices but your 540 stares software with the 840 & 1040 so view those, 840 might be most useful as it has the button interface of the 540 in addition to its touch screen. The 530 videos will show you the button interface as on the 540 but the software on the 540 is closer to that on the 840, you will have to bridge that gap, perhaps view the 840 video but follow along on your 540 working out the relevant buttons to achieve the same as the touch.

Also a Garmin long term user was offering video tutorials for the 1040, I have not viewed any so don’t know if they are useful, you will have to decide.

Otherwise while the learning curve is steeper than necessary the devices have been useful for me but sometimes frustrating and disappointing.

Good luck, tell us which videos you find useful for the benefit of future new users.

  • @L.Rouge thx for your reply and references. Will definitely check.

Re the learning curve and UX/UI of these Edge (I suspect pretty much all of them use the same software) devices, I imagine that an early adopter would have no problem upgrading to the latest hardware.
But that doesn't mean Garmin shouldn't update their user experience and interface. To me it looks like they just dump a bunch of options for the sake of having "more" features than the competition. Not familiar with the other popular devices, but can imagine they sort of follow the same development route.
It also happens I have some experience (25y) in this UX/UI field and for me KIIS and LIM (keep it simple stupid and less is more) principles should be the baseline for any user experience.
When you have options hidden 4-5 screens deep, a user will get lost after the first two taps/button pushes.

Obviously, if an option is available (like Auto Start) make sure it works before releasing it.

  • Good to see I am not alone in this frustration. I had forgotten the "fun" I had setting up my old Edge 500 which died and was replaced with an Edge 540. I am getting my ass kicked trying to set up the data fields similar to what I had on my old Edge 500. Not intuitive. Manual not helping much. Wondering if I also need to buy a new phone because mine is too old to use Garmin Connect. I miss my Edge 500 very much! Perhaps more IS less. Edit: After my first ride to work using it, I was able to sit down, not in a rush, and push buttons for an hour, and boom, I got it. It is now set up with the data fields I want, similar to my Edge 500 was set up. I am already appreciating the bigger, more legible screen/data fields, and longer battery life, even with the backlight continuously on during my predawn commute.
