Map update 2025.10 not showing up in Garmin Express

Today was announced that topoactive maps 2025.10 will replace the older 2024.20 cycling map. These have a annoying bug where edge *30 devices cannot reroute or route to a saved location, unless popularity routing option was disabled. (This was not the case with 2024.10)

So I was happy to read that the bug was confirmed and solved in 2025.10.

I succesfully updated my Fenix 7 watch to 2025.10 but after connecting my edge530 I get a "Synchronisation with Garmin Connect failed" error, and only the trailforks map is showing up. No 2025.10 update but also the currently installed 2024.20 map is not shown anymore.

Garmin Express is up to date 7.25.0 + , edge firmware 9.75 too.

I hope this will be solved in the comming days but nevertheless I wanted to let people know that there's an issue going on with this update. (From my perspective)

  • Well there is a serious annoying issue with "Map Update 2025.10", I installed it yesterday morning and gave it a short test and it works. But since then, twice I have connected to Garmin Express and each time it tells me to update to "Map Update 2025.10" which I have done, but it still keeps wanting me to update?

I have now installed it 3 times and it is still wanting me to update again.

    File Sizes are:-

    Europe West 2.66GB

    Europe Central 2.70GB

    Europe East  2.80 GB

  • I have the same problem. Called garming support and I got the same explanation.

  • No update here. After connecting I got "synchronisation error" and only the trailforks map is shown. So I assume it is still work in progress...

  • In order to continue and ride tomorrow I downloaded a map from: https://freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/imprint.html#. Look simular to a normal garmin map.

  • Here is a lot misinformation.

The same mapping content will now be included in our TopoActive maps and can be purchased or downloaded on compatible devices.

The recent announcement from Garmin state that TopoActive maps replace the Cycling Maps. You can purchase additional maps like in the past for regions you don't have already pre-installed. The map data is changing, not more.

The actual problem I recognized on 2025-05-16:
Two days ago (2025-05-14) Garmin Express offered me the update to TopoActive 2025.10. Today it doesn't, it even doesn't offer the option to reinstall the existing Cycling Maps 2024.10 anymore. Only Trailforks.

Furthermore Garmin Express complains about a sync issue, when "Tools and Connect" is selected:
"We've having trouble retrieving all your purchased content. Try refreshing the list"

I think "purchased" means year, the pre-installed maps (in my case Europe).
I think Garmin has server side issues. Please fix them Slight smile

    * Reinstalling maps is currently not possible
    * Update to new TopoActive is not possible

  • First day Express showed a Synchronisation error. It clearly has issues with identifying the device and its supposed content. And Garmin already confirmed that they are working on that.

The misinformation comes from Garmin because of this:

Disclaimer: Edge® 540/840/1030 Plus/1040/1050/Edge® Explore 2 series devices do not require the purchase of Garmin TopoActive maps, and the devices offer free map changes and updates via Garmin Express software. Edge 530/830/Edge Explore devices do not have MicroSD/ SD card card slots. These users will need to purchase a Download version for coverage.

  • May I ask you were/when Garmin confirmed that they're working on it? You mention the re-routing issue confirmed but that is another topic.

The article you mention adds to the confusion. The main issue is Garmin's new knowledge base article?

Effective May 7, 2025, Garmin Cycle Maps for Edge® cycling computers and Garmin® watches are being discontinued. The same mapping content will now be included in our TopoActive maps and can be purchased or downloaded on compatible devices.

    I would suggest:

Effective May 7, 2025 Garmin Cycling Maps will be replaced by TopoActive maps, for Edge cycling computers and Watches.

  • This is the exact reply on my ticket; in Dutch so please translate ;)

Of course I asked to fix the bug, and it is all clear for everyone that is caused by a bug in the maps. And they will not release new maps only for *30 devices. As several people already received topoactive maps, that will be the solution.

Sit and wait... The current maps still work so it is not an urgent problem for many.

  • Thank you.

My problem less urgent. Currently maps cannot be reinstalled or upgraded. And Garmin Express also misses a downgrade feature, which would help you.

Luckily I’ve turned off previously both popularity features. They distract me (size and colors of roads misleading, undesired routing). I made manually a backup of the pre-installed maps, before upgrading to 2024.20. I will to it again, when the upgrade to  2025.10 is possible. I suggest everyone to do this.

PS: I’ve read somewhere that official maps are signed by Garmin. Maybe even signed device specific. So probably everyone needs to make a personal backup.

  • The update has returned. I'm updating, foolishly or bravely remains to be seen.

    EDIT: Success!
