2024.20 maps unusable for me

I just made the mistake of installing the 2024.20 Euro map. What a disaster. I get a consistent "Route Calculation Error - Maps do not have routable roads in this area". This is, of course, nonsense, as 2024.10 was fine with where I am,

Also, the top information bar is blank, except for messages like "Ready to Navigate" and "Off Course" - no mention of upcoming turns or anything remotely useful.

  • Are you in the UK? If so, I have the same problem - it's described as being Central Europe. Is this another Brexit copyright issue?

  • Perhaps this recent 530 posting helps? refers to errors with the after installing the above maps and when using "popularity" routing.

  • Thanks for the suggestion, but in fact I have an older Garmin - Touring Plus - and the 'Popularity' setting doesn't exist. That thread is interesting though as it suggests a bug with the map update. I have realised that the map version that is being installed is Garmin Cycle Map Europe Central 2024.20. And as far as I can see that map doesn't cover Western Europe and the UK, which may be the problem I am facing. The proper map should just be called 'Europe', I believe. I will try calling Garmin later on.

  • If I recall, a few people had issues when they installed this map, myself included, it did get mentioned in one of the forums, I cannot recall which one and I cannot find it doing a search but the solution was to reinstall the map which solved the problem for me.

I cannot remember what my issue was, but when I checked the size of the file, it was smaller than it should have been which indicated part of the map was missing. The reinstall gave me the correct file size.

  • on my 520 and then 530 I used OSM maps especially the "OnRoad" format from sites like BBBike.org as they only included roads without the blot that Garmin maps seem to accumulate and you could pick exactly the coverage area you wanted. Better to give these your donation rather than garmin? Other formats also included the "routing" data necessary if you used the Route Navigation calculation functions (which I did not use) On my 1040 I have got lazy and just use garmin maps but often wish for the cleanness and clarity of the OSM maps.

  • Well, Garmin support have told me that the problem is my device which doesn't have enough operating memory to cope with the increase in map size. It doesn't seem possible to just load the Western Europe map file. Anyhow they have offered a trade-in deal which I will take up. It's a 30% discount which serves Garmin well as they will sell wholesale at that discount, at minimum. If their explanation is correct it means that we need to think of their devices as like mobile phones which have a limited life span as software gets more sophisticated and expands.

  • I did ask Garmin whether buying their Europe map would solve my problem - at £25 much cheaper than replacement - but as they diagnosed lack of memory alternative maps would also have an issue.
