Edge 530 vs 540

I’ve been looking at a cycling computer and I think the 530 or 540 would meet my needs.

When comparing the two I don’t think I need the extra features the  540 offers.

That said, the only thing that puts me off is from what I’ve read, you can’t transfer routes from Garmin connect via the app to the 530 and it needs to be plugged in to a computer. Is that correct?

The other question is; how do people find the buttons on the 530/540? Some reviews suggest the touch screen on the 840 is worth paying the extra for.

Thanks.

  • Happily, "No, not correct".  The GC app sends courses over Bluetooth right to the 530.  You can also turn on WiFi on the 530 and get the courses that way, but I leave WiFi off on the 530, I don't see the point.  Just my opinion.

Buttons... If you want to do lots of map searching while out riding, then the buttons get tedious.  For my use, I make any courses I need on a laptop, click "Send to Device" in GC web, then when I turn on the 530 and sync to GC app on my phone the course automatically downloads when they sync.  You can also "pin" routes in Ride with GPS and they automatically download as well.  So, if not searching maps much while riding, buttons are fine.

Buttons also... I use the optional Garmin Remote, it is paired as sensor just like speed sensors, heart rate, etc.  The remote mounts right next to the grip and allow paging through any Garmin Edge without taking your hands off the bars.  The remote is a primary reason I couldn't see changing brands.  I'm primarily MTB and riding one handed isn't often an option.  That said I'm a huge fan of it for my gravel rides as well.

    I hope this helps.
