Corrupt .FIT file - how to recover?

I did my longest ride of the year yesterday and alas the .FIT file has been corrupted whilst saving. On my Edge 520 in history, it shows the total ride time (, total distance and start time, but when I explore the activity on the device summary is all empty. Upon connecting to my computer the .FIT file from yesterday is a paltry 79 bytes so I'm very concerned it's not recoverable. It was a huge ride, totalling 91 miles over 13 hours, so I would be gutted if I can't get at the data. I think the battery was low when I got home and pressed save, so maybe that was a contributing factor. Any help, very, very gratefully received. Thanks in advance, Ben

  • Assume you've already tried manual upload from your Garmin device to Garmin Connect Web - How Do I Manually Upload an Activity I Recorded to Garmin Connect?

If you get any message other than Import Complete, then there is a problem with the file. Attach it to this thread. We can take a look to see if it is repairable.

    • Zip the file, then in a reply post Insert >> Image/video/file >> click Upload >> browse for file >> OK.
    • Or upload the fit file to a reputable file sharing service, such as OneDriveGoogle DriveDropbox, make the file public, then paste a link to the file in your post.

79 bytes is tiny for such a ride. You can also check if a larger file exists but ended up being deleted - how do I get my activity back if I delete it? - Garmin Connect Web - Mobile Apps & Web - Garmin Forums

  • Hi there,

Thanks so much for replying. Yes I've tried a manual upload and it says 'failed'. See photo attached. If you could look at the file that would be amazing. But given how long the ride was, there's no way all the data can be contained in this 79 byte file. Looking at your advice on checking for larger files, both the NewFiles and TempFiT directories are sadly empty. There's a 252 byte file in Records, so I've included that in the ZIP. I've also tried Bitwar (I'm a Mac user) and it found 8 files, no FITs though. Also I looked in the Hidden Folders and found some substantial files in a folder called Store-V2. I'll put that and some other useful images in this download link - https://we.tl/t-vZwFp1CUqd - And I've attached a ZIP file with the FIT file from my ride and the Records.FIT one and another called Device.FIT, which was just sitting in the root directory. Thanks so much for replying and potentially having a look at these for me. Best, BenFIT Files.zip

  • All 3 of these files are way too small to have any meaningful data...

If you have anything else, I could take a look.

  • Well thanks very much for trying. It's much appreciated. Other than my other suggestions in the screen grabs I shared, there are no other .FIT files that could be my ride from Tuesday, unless they're showing incorrect date stamps. I tried the free version of Fit File Repair Tool with the tiny ride file I sent you and it said it contained no data and was just a header file. So I guess it never saved the ride data when I finished and pressed save. If you have any other ideas, please share. But I think the data is gone. Many, many thanks for your time.

  • Did you eliminate lack of storage space on the device or reaching the limit of 200 activities as a cause?

  • Hi Peter,

Thanks for replying. I've had the unit for a goof 4/5 years and never practice keeping the storage low or the max work outs below 200. And I do more than that a year, so I believe it auto deletes the oldest work outs right?! But my battery was low when I got back, the unit had been soaked for the last few hours and perhaps these two played a part. I saved as usual and think I left the unit to auto power off. But I was absolutely knackered, so can't be sure. Maybe with a very long ride like this, more battery is required to get a 'good' save. But I've no idea where the ride data went. It seems all that was saved was the header, including total distance, total ride time, start time and that's it. Gutted I lost the route and everything else, but unless you have any genius ideas? In the future I've keep the rides closer to 100. But I also think I want a better more modern until. Cheers, Ben
