GPS Firmware Updates During Activities

Greetings,

I have had at least four instances in the last six months where a GPS firmware update interrupts a ride and effectively renders the Edge 530 useless. Why is this happening? Shouldn't the software know that I'm in the middle of an activity and not to update it during that time? It's very frustrating.

Has anyone had any luck solving this issue?

  • If you don’t require connected features such as livetrack etc, blocking the GC app access to mobile data in your phone settings will certainly prevent any downloads when out on a ride.

Otherwise, periodic syncing with Garmin Express will minimize the chances of getting surprise downloads.

  • As @PeterK_55 says, I think regular syncing with Garmin Express is the key.  I kill two birds with one stone by syncing with Garmin Express before every ride using my laptop and thereby charging the 530 as well.  I also like that the laptop USB charges the battery slower than a "charge brick", better for the battery.  Since I have to plug in anyway, it' s no big deal to let Express sync.  Using this method I've never had a software interruption whilst out for a ride.

  • Thanks, I will try that. My Garmin doesn't typically leave my garage, but I suppose I will have to adjust my routine.
