Forced software updates on the 530

Is there a way to stop the forced software updates that change the settings in my 530?   The one that turned off my screen to save the battery was especially annoying?  Thanks for any help.

  • There has not been an update for over a year or have you put the 530 to sleep yourself unknowingly?

  • Hi!  I use my 530 once or twice a week.  Sometimes I put it to sleep, other times I turn it off to prevent battery drain.  I use Garmin Connect on my iPhone to upload rides to Strava.  I got an update about a month ago that changed some settings.  I didn't find out till I started my ride, so that was super annoying.   Today, as I was trying to change things back to the old state I saw an update come in and install itself without asking if I wanted to do that.  Not sure what is going on, but your comment suggests I might not go thru this again for a while.  At least I hope so.  Thanks for your response

  • As leginswal states there hasn’t been a firmware update for quite a while, but there are occasional updates of the Timezone map, GPSdata and CIQ apps.

I’d suggest connecting to Garmin Express to perform the updates as I’ve found it to be faster and more reliable. Auto update of CIQ apps can be switched off in Garmin Express.

  • And as the others have said the last general availability software update was 9.75 in March 2023, almost 18 months, there has been 2 beta versions available in that time but neither was released to production and you would have to be registered for beta to have them offered to you. In all cases,  in my experience, they are not “forced”, they might be downloaded to the device automatically but then the next power on you get a notification there is an update available and you get an “install” or “remind me” option. I do see some users talking about “forced updates” and maybe there is some configuration that secretly updates the software but I have never seen it in 15 years of Garmin penance. The current 530 software version is 9.75, the unreleased betas were 9.79 & 9.81.

ps I am reminded that there was an update 9.80 about 6 months ago but it was only offered to Asia Region 530/830 devices to "fix" an unspecified issue?

  • Thank you,  I appreciate the help.   There is something buggy in my software or hardware but I guess I have to just live with it.   I found a place to turn my screen back on.  Will see if it works the next time I ride.

  • it was not a put to sleep issue, if I touched a button on the side the screen would come back on for about 10 seconds with cumulative data and then go off.  there was a warning that this was going to happen but it did not give me an option to turn it off.  I found the control button later when I got home

  • It is a " Put to sleep issue"

You have activated "Battery Save Mode". When an activity is running, the device will go to sleep after a few seconds and can be woken up by pressing the on/off button or it will wake up when a certain"enabled" event occurs

Go into "Menu", "Settings" and look for " Battery save Mode" and disable it
