Disabling the virtual partner, Edge 530

In one of the previous posts under a similar heading, the person suggested creating a new duplicate route and then going to the bottom of the new course screen (before saving), and setting the VP average speed to 1 mph (or kph). As you do a ride on that course, yo soon will see the VP disappear off the left horizon.

I followed those instructions, but noticed that you may not have to create and save/rename the new identical route (and delete the old one). If you hit the 3 dots at the bottom of the old route screen, you will see  popup choice that allows you to edit. From there, you can scroll down to the speed partner (VP) and reset the default speed from 16 to whatever you want, like 1 mph.

I haven't followed through and tried this on the road yet, and I stlll need to synch to my device. But my fingers are crossed.

  • This should be a settings. End of the story.

  • My directions above may be a bit optimistic. The trouble is, I think Garmin has pre-programmed average speeds for any route you create by simply importing a ride, say, from Strava to Garmin. You have to find a way to change the average before importing the route to Garmin.

That means you have to launder the route before importing it. So, first, you have to download a ride (even from a Garmin route) to another app that maps routes. I use "plotaroute.com." There, you can edit things like what kind of ride it is (hiking, riding, maybe by car). I simply chose to make my routes hikes, generally; that average speed is way below riding speed. You can choose what speed you like, I believe;' the point is to set it much slower than you ride, so the VP fades into the background as you ride.

    So, for example,

    1. save a strava route to your computer.

    2. upload it to plotaroute (or some other routing program). I drag and drop it from my computer to the plotaroute "upload a route" popup menu item.

    3. save the route there, give it a name, save it as a hike.

    4. download that route to your computer.

    5. go to Garmin connect/courses, open create a course button

    6. draga and drop the course from your computer to Garmin.

    7. make sure to scroll down and set the average speed where you want - - likely very slow so the vp disappears shortly into your ride.

    8. save all that.

    9. load it to your Garmin bike computer.

Let me know if this works for you - - I think I got all the steps outlined - - and death to the virtual partner!
