Following a course

I bought an Edge 530 not so long back and have used it succesfully several times to follow a preset gpx course that i (eventually) managed to load onto it from Komoot but when I tried to follow a mountain bike course recently around Yorkshire and was having horrendous issues with it.       When following the trail the unit would regularly keep telling me to do a u-turn even though I had been following the directions on screen and at one point which ever direction I went in it kept either telling me to u-turn or that I was off course - exasperating and I have no idea why ?     Someone suggested this could be a gps issue ?

As well, In order to follow a course e.g. an MTB course, do you have to first set the activity profile to a matching setting e.g. mtb in order for it to work properly or is this irrelevent?    I'm not really sure what the activity profile does as such.

thanks

chris

  • Make sure route recalculation is off so you won’t be rerouted anywhere else (Menu>Settings>[your Activity Profile]>Navigation>Routing>Recalc=OFF

You could also switch off turn guidance and just follow the trail on the map without prompts (Menu>Navigation>Courses>Course Options>Turn Guidance)

Using different Activity Profiles give you the option of tailoring data screens and selecting different maps and ride types etc to better suit the ride but it’s not mandatory.

MTB trails just aren't regularly defined accurately enough in the maps.  Slight errors like the true trail being somewhat off from the mapped GPS cause the Edge to go nuts.  Also in deep woods cover, you are more likely to have GPS inconsistencies causing these location errors.  I've been very successful with following new trails with my 530, riding them blind without a guide, by just following the course on the map.  Back when all we had was paper maps, that was what "navigation" was!

  • Hi Chris, my 530 has the same issues. If you get off a preloaded course (road in my case) it tries to prompt you back to the point you left the course it looks like. If you ask the 530 to navigate to a saved location however, (re)routing works fine.
