Edge 530 & Elite Suito smart trainer: speed/distance and climbing issue(?)

Hi All,

I have a Garmin Edge 530 and I just bought an Elite Suito (smart) turbo trainer.

Edge unit and turbo have their latest firmware installed.

Pairing went well and I had a couple of rides.

I set the wheel size(84mm) and gear resistance (36/22) correcty I believe, based on the gear used and the recommended wheel value from Elite.

I have used the turbo in ERG mode to do a couple of workouts.

I do not own a power meter so I don't have a way to validate the power outputs but these "feel" right based on what I'd expect, from friends of similar fitness level etc.

QUESTION

When riding at 200W in ERG mode the Garmin records a speed around 18-20km/h. The speed seems very low. Friends doing workouts at similar power usually average well over 30kh/m

I installed Zwift and tried it in ERG mode and I can see that when keeping a similar power, my speed is much higher (above 30km/h). Zwift also somehow records climbing data.

Can you please advise if I'm doing anything wrong on the Edge530 or any setting I should change to get a meaningful speed recording?

At the end of the activity the Edge 530 records no data for climbing. Is there a way to allow it to record elevation/climbing information?

Many thanks

  • wheel size 84mm? really? I have the value set to 2160.

  • Yes, that's the value advised by Elite.

  • The trainer will just report a speed based on how fast the cassette is turning which is dependant on your gear being used.  It has nothing to do with your power output.  When using a trainer speed & distance is relevant either.  All that matters is effort (power) and time.  It is best just to ignore the speed number.  You aren't climbing so that is why there is no climb data.  You are just outputting a certain wattage in ERG mode.

You are not doing anything wrong.

Zwift has its own internal calculations to generate a speed number and it simulates climbs which is why it generates climb data.
