Elevation/Grade issue

Hello,

For some reason the last few rides my edge 530 doesn't show correct grade/elevation. I'll be going up a 20% grade and it will say -5% or 0%. Not just on steep climbs. I might be on a steady 5% and it will read 0% or even say it's a downhill.  I looked, and the software version is like 9 months old, so could this be hardware related? My last few rides have been between 18f-28f and everything is wet and gritty. I can't imagine any of that is the culprit though... right?

Thanks

  • My 530 has always had this behaviour since I bought it and it's had several firmware upgrades. If I recall it's been mentioned a few times in the forum.

When it indicates your going uphill when in fact your going downhill I think I have read somewhere that it is "Lag" in the system due to the rate it samples the air pressure so it is always behind with what is actually happening. The same can happen when you go from descending to climbing but not always obvious as your speed can drop a lot and the time lag is not so obvious as you have not covered so much distance before it gives you a positive reading.

  • Thanks, but this is more than a delay or sampling rate issue. I can climb for minutes or even miles with the reading stuck at 0%. It isn't just a display update issue either as I did a route yesterday that I know is around 9k feet of climbing and it was uploaded to garmin connect as like ~4.5k feet of ascent ride. I'm hoping someone can suggest some sort of calibration I couldn't find while searching..

    Thanks again!

  • There could be an issue with the 530 not being calibrated to the correct elevation at the start.

Set up a location at the very point you start from along with it's accurate elevation. When you press "Start" whilst on that location you have recorded, a message should flash up to inform you that the elevation is being calibrated.

That should iron out the issue with the amount of elevation climbed during a ride.

Another issue that can happen on a ride and that is a big rise or fall in atmospheric pressure due to a weather front moving in rapidly and that can cause big errors. But that is the easy to spot on a download as there will be a big change in the elevation chart. This issue will show up as a disparity between what was climbed and descended.

Another possible issue and this could be the culprit could be the hole in the back of the 530 is blocked with dirt etc but I cannot remember how you clean it. It is in the forum somewhere how to do it

It is well mentioned in the forums disparities between what was climbed and descended and also between other riders on the same ride having different days.
