530 Segment time different than in Garmin Connect

I have a segment that I ride about once a week.  I have recorded rides on this segment 3 times.  Today, after finishing this segment my 530 flashed on the screen that there was a -13 second difference from my best time.  Needless to say I was VERY happy.  Once I got home and uploaded the ride to Garmin Connect I decided to take a second look at the figures so that I could revel in my new found speed.

My actual personal best: 4:28:

My 530 is showing today's segment time as: 4.41

Garmin Connect is showing today's segment time as: 4.59:

I have read the other articles regarding this issue.  I am using 1 second intervals as my recording criteria.  Obviously what I was led to believe was a time -13 lower than my best calculates to +13 seconds slower than my best (according to my personal best and today's 530 segment time).  Ok, maybe I didn't see exactly what the screen was showing as I hit the end of the segment today.   But with that said.... Why is Garmin Connect showing a time of +31 seconds?   For the record I am using a Garmin Speed sensor and not relying on GPS

  • Would you be willing to share the FIT activity file for that ride?

  • Sure.  I'm having a hard time figuring out how to attach the .fit file to this thread(?)

  • Let me send you a Private Message.

  • OK,  I tried to send the file in a PM to you earlier but it said it doesn't accept that format.

  • My best guess is that it is to do with the start location of the segment and the approach vector.

The Edge captures a time of 4:42. That  data goes to GC and it uses the GPS data to compute it's time own time for the segment, 4:59.

The start location is just after you make a left onto the path. Before you make that left turn you are traveling for a short distance perpendicular to the start direction. I think that you are close enough to the start location that GC is matching it as started even though you have not go through the start. The Edge is waiting for you to pass through the start.  This results in the difference.

There may not be much you can about this as you cannot change the matching logic in GC.

As a test you could make a right turn when you reach the path and ride 100 yards away from the start. Turn around and then approach the start straight on from this other path. I think you will find that the segment time on the Edge and GC will then match.

The other option is to create your own segment and move the start a little further along the path away from the turn so that GC does not match it when you make the turn.

  • Thanks for all your help.  What you're saying about it passing through the start and that first curve makes sense.  I do know that on this particular ride the starting point did seem to fall on the location of the curve and not when I got to the exact start point.  Although, I wasn't complete sure where the actual start point began, but again, what you're saying makes sense.  I think I may adjust the start point just a little so the GPS doesn't get confused next time.

    Thanks again!

  • I did get the 530 to work properly by moving the start point a little further up the hill.  The segment seemed to start and end just fine.

But now I need to deal with another problem.  When I get to the end of the segment the screen displays something like "You beat your best time by -11 seconds,  New personal best".  But when it downloads to Connect it shows me as doing it +11 seconds .  In other words, I did it for my first time on Friday,  Yesterday it said I had a better time but when I look at the list of people crossing that segment my Friday time is faster (and further up the list) than my Monday time.  What I don't understand is that it shows the ride as a "descent" when it is in fact an "ascent".

    I'm giving up.
