Courses - distance to key points along the course

I have a course, which is passing along several spots (a key climb, a cafe for a stop, a statue id like to take a picture of..)

how can i mark these so i can see these listed in chronological order, and the distance to each (distance along the route, not the direct distance)?

also, i have one spot (a bridge) i will pass on the way out and on the return. Ideally i can mark these to see the distance to the bridge on the way out, and the distance (folowing the course) on the way back.

im a basecamp user, not the online courseplanner user.

  • Course Points do exactly what you want, I know nothing re Basecamp, if it can create course points that get included in an exported route/course (that gets imported into the 530), then use that, if not it can be done in the free Garmin Connect though better in some other planners, there is much discussion re course points in these forums, search for “course points”

  • top, youve pointed me in the right direction!  what SW do you use to create your coursepoints into the exported route/course?  I've experimented, and the solution i use (adding a route & buch of waypoints into a SW called JAVAWA which then has an option to convert all waypoints into embedded coursepoints into the route/course. --> when i upload this to garmin connect those coursepoints are no longer there.  Id like to avoid creating each and every course piont manually in garmin connect, especiially as i have them all as waypoints. but you were 100% correct: course points is what i wanted.

  • It can get confusing, all the planners do almost the same thing but none seem to do it 100%, there are gaps and overlaps and most of them seem designed to make it difficult to move routes between planners, Garmin Connect route planner is free and does most of what you need but it also makes it difficult to import routes from elsewhere to the extent that it deletes most course points from imported routes. I use a mixture of planners, RWGPS for some as I get premium (ie paid) features through my cycling club but I use GC for routes I am going to use on my trainer as it smooths the grade transitions for virtual rides.. Someone may come along with better BaseCamp knowledge and tell you how to do it all with Basecamp. Maybe best to start with Garmin Connect till you get used to using the Course Points

This discussion (2 years old) has a summary of what you can get via Course Points and a few posts down there are some screen shots.

PS The course points can also be displayed on the map screen at their location so you can see them approaching
