Failed to start planned workout. How to match a ride to a workout manually?

Hi!

I'm trying to train with Garmin Coach, and today was my first planned workout. For some reason my Edge 530 did not suggest me to start the workout immediately, probably because it had not synced the plan yet. I tried the following:

Menu > training (at this point there was a notification 'download completed' or something like that) > Training Plan > (selected today's workout) > Find a course > (selected a course) > Ride.

I expected the workout to begin as soon as I start riding the course and I was completely sure that it happened so. Unfortunately, the workout has not started, the ride was recorded as a standalone activity and the plan thinks that I still need to workout as long as there seems to be no way to match a ride with a planned workout.

Is it a bug that if I choose 'select a course' the workout does not start?

Is there a way to match the ride with the planned activity? I tried choosing ride type 'training' as it was suggested somewhere on the forum in similar situation, but it did not help.

What happens if a GC training plan does not see a planned activity as completed?

  • My experience of trying to coordinate a workout with a course has never been successful. It all goes wrong when you have to do a hard interval but find the course is downhill at that point or when you get to a rest phase, it's uphill, or wind plays it's part, or you have to stop at a road junction during the middle of a hard interval so it becomes pointless and I only do workouts on the indoor trainer.

The way I used do it though is start my course, then when I get going, start my workout and hope it fits in with the course, but it never does. Ideally, you need a flat road that you can create a circuit on with no road junctions or any form of obstacle to affect the workout but even then, you cannot plan for the unexpected like slow tractors, walkers on the road,  horses, dogs off the leash getting in the way or extending leashes across the road.

But, when it comes to hill climb workouts, their a bit easier to plan and I just have the workout in my head or on a bit of card stuck to the top tube or wrote on the bars if they are matt black with a pencil and make it work by use of the "Lap button" and once I have marked the top and the bottom of the hill, I can just ride up and down and the 530 will automatically record the workout and rest laps without having to press the "Lap button" any more.
