Turn by turn directions on Edge 530

Hi all, I've had the Edge 530 for a year + and tend to use it mostly for heart rate and speed display. The device has the full maps of Europe loaded, and I'd like to create routes specific to activities. For example navigation going from city A to city B on MTB so the path includes trails, or road so it's only paved. Or multi-points, to city A then B, then back home. I'm not finding the user manual super clear on how do this. Any pointer? YouTube videos or articles you know of, or if you know how to do this it will be very helpful. Thanks

  • Hi, I can't comment much on a Garmin-specific answer, because I personally use Strava for creating routes, and then sync them to my Edge. Either Strava or one of the other route-building apps (RideWithGPS, Komoot, etc) might achieve what you're looking for.

I did try using Garmin's route-building (in Garmin Connect website) a few years ago, but at the time I found Strava was better for my needs and easier to use. I haven't tried Garmin's again since. I should probably check it out again to see if it's changed.

In any case I think I wouldn't ever try to build a route on the device itself. The small screen, clunky interface, and slow processing power would brutal to use. At the very least I'd use the Garmin Connect phone app (or one of the others mentioned), and then sync the route to the Edge.

  • You can't create activity specific routes.  All routes are available whatever activity profile you are using.

It is best to use a route planner (RideWithGPS/Komoot/Strava/Garmin Connect website/etc) instead of creating routes on the device itself.  That way you have full control over where the route takes you and you can check the route you have is sensible before putting it on the device and using it.  Generating a route on the device will likely produce some sub optimal sections that you have no control over.
