Discontinuous Heart Rate

Hi everyone,
It almost always happens to me that the HR detection carried out via Edge 530 is absolutely discontinuous compared to what I get from a running activity recorded via Fenix 6. I don't think it's the battery since I have verified more activity over the last few weeks, running always perfect, intermittent cycling. Do you know what the reason could be? Obviously when I go out cycling I have both the Fenix and the Edge, but the activity is only recorded via the Edge, could it be that I have to remove the band from the Fenix to avoid creating contrasts?

I always use an HRM dual Premium, never the wrist sensor

  • You don't mention the heart rate source, but I suspect you're trying to broadcast from the watch to the Edge.  I'd recommend a HRM chest strap during cycling, much more accurate and reliable for high exertion activities with lots of movement.  My Garmin Instinct watch is accurate for everyday use, but isn't even close to the chest strap during biking activities.  I'm not surprised at all by the dropouts, the watch is likely moving on your wrist to a place where it can't pick up the heartrate properly while cycling.  Get a HRM2 chest sensor and all will likely be well, and much more accurate.  You can also broadcast the chest strap to your watch while running for more accuracy during those activites.

  • You are right but I implied the use of the chest sensor, I don't trust the wrist sensor. The graph and all the comparison are made with an HRM dual premium: never had problem during running activity registered by Fenix, always had problems during cycling activity registered by Edge 530

  • Sorry, I missed the line where you mentioned using the "HRM dual Premium".

My only other recommendation is to make sure the Edge is only paired to the HRM via ANT+.  If you also pair it via Bluetooth you can confuse it and get drops.  That happened to me with my first Edge (Edge 130), I accidentally paired it via both protocols and it ended up with large gaps.  Also, you shouldn't have to take off the watch, just make sure it's not paired to the Edge as a sensor.

  • I checked but from the sensor info details I have the possibility to choose the kind of connection (BT or ANT+). Right now the sensor is connected by ANT+ both to Fenix and Edge. Am I missing something? What do you suggest to check more?

  • Hi, you can use a tool like Fit File Repair Tool to check the reception quality between your HRM and Edge. Or you could post a FIT file here and maybe someone can take a look at it.
