Multiple turns displayed

I was riding a organized group ride with a route I downloaded from RidewithGPS. At one point in the ride I re-loaded the map (or maybe a different map of the same route). While I was riding one of the screens on my Edge show at least 3 of the next turns as well as a checkered flag icon at the bottom of the screen with the remaining mileage to the final destination.  I had never seen this before and haven't been able to reproduce it.  I have searched everywhere and have asked around including in a chat with a tech rep at Garmin.

Can anyone tell me how to display multiple upcoming turns?  This is really handy when riding with others who don't know the route, especially since I am usually the slowest :-(

You aren’t reloading/loading a “map”. You are loading a “course” (the term Garmin uses) or a “route”. (“Map” isn’t the correct…

  • When the course is loaded, there is an extra data screen listing the next few turns. Simply scroll through the data screens to get to it.

  • Thanks!  You are at least the 6th person I have asked, no one seemed to know.

It appears when the route is loaded then it disappears, no? I have had 3 different models of Garmin Edge head units, and have only seen it once.

It would be great if there was an option to keep it as a regular display screen.

  • You can also use the Distance to Next or Course Point Distance data fields to show the remaining distance to the next turn.

It sounds like you are talking about “course points”.

RWGPS includes “course points” in FIT and TCX files. They are the “cue sheet” items in the RWGPS route page.

“Course points” show up as magenta icons on the map page.

They also show up on the “course points” page. Get to it by using the next/previous page buttons.

Note that you can disable them in the settings for the course. Disabling them make it look like the course doesn’t have it.

You might not see them depending on how you download the course/route. You might need to turn the device off and on for them to show up.

    =======================

Note that the big white arrows is “turn guidance”, which has nothing to do with “course points”.

The “turn guidance” instructions are generated (calculated) by the device. (Course points are in the file.)

“Turn guidance” and “course points” are separate things with the same purpose (you can use both together or each separately or none of them.)

On the touch-screen models, you can see the list of “turn guidance” turns by tapping on the text at the top of the map page. There might be a way of seeing this list in the button models.

I’m not sure if it’s “really” handy. I never use it for navigation (I keep an eye on the map instead). Maybe, you are used to using cue sheets. If so, I’d encourage you to use the map instead.

  • OK This is probably what I saw, because I did download a route from RWGPS.  Thanks!!
I usually follow the map as well but it is really handy if I am "leading" a route because I am typically the slowest and can give several cues at once to the faster riders when the turns are close together.

  • Ahh. They should have their own device. If you are close enough not to have to yell, you could be in front.

(Note that I don't care what you do. I just wanted to be sure that you weren't missing out on other approaches.)
