Do additional sensors use more power?

Just a thought - if you have more ANT+ sensors connected to your Edge, does it reduce the battery life? I mean, I have an HRM and a cadence sensor, if I were to disconnect these, would the battery last longer?

I'm aware of the battery saver mode, but just interested to hear other's experience.

  • Yes more connected sensors will use more battery but you may not notice much difference in reality if you still have at least on active sensor. No sensors at all would save the battery more as then the wireless connection would be turned off.

  • Hmm... That's a good point. I'll try turning off Bluetooth too. I wonder if you can turn off ANT+...

  • The device will stop looking sensors a couple of minutes after you start an activity.  I would assume the ANT+ radio is powered down then if you don't have anything paired but I don't know for sure.

  • It is not for Edge, but as I observed a Tempe, which uses ANT+ too, or a ANT+ HRM-3 can connect to Fenixes  (or in other words can wake up that radio of Fenixes if it has been really switched off), even if that sensor was the only one ANT+ sensor  around.

But similarly to Wongataa it is said not with a full certainty, it was not tested thoroughly, it is just something I feel I remember so.

  • Receiving signals from a connected ANT+ sensor such as an HRM, uses very little power and wouldn’t make much difference to run time.

Searching for sensors to connect does increase the power usage but searching for an HRM will stop 2 minutes after an activity is started. If an HRM connection is lost during a ride, power usage will increase again until it reconnects.

In summary, disable any sensors not actively being used, but otherwise there isn’t much to be gained by disabling the useful ones.

  • Yes, but not much.  ANT+ is very efficient on power. To extend battery life on Audax rides I turn of GLONASS and only run GPS.  Turn off Bluetooth and reduce the screen brightness using adaptive brightness.  Use autostop, this helps as the Edge saves the track when Paused, emptying memory, once the memory starts to fill up the processor has to work harder and uses more battery.  Basically, the best way to extend your battery life is to turn off anything not being used on the Edge.
