Edge 530- Average speed and activity timer is off.

The average speed on my brand new edge 530 is showing at least 5kph higher than in reality.

I also noticed that the speed is correct during the activity but the duration seems to be off. Strava trims the file to put in a realistic average speed though so i assume the correct data is there but just sometime is off.

I assume there is an easy fix? All help appreciated.

  • I do use it but the issue happens when I use it or not.

  • Ok I'm having trouble following your original post, so could use some more detail to help. You mention the device shows an average speed during the activity that is higher than "reality"; where is the "reality average speed" value coming from?

Could you post a link to the original FIT file (unedited)? The link you shared shows the activity, but the option to download the FIT file is missing, so you might need to change the privacy setting.

Also the link indicates that the summary data has been edited; which values did you change?

Are you using a speed sensor?

Extra helpful would be a photo or screenshot of the average speed shown on the device along with the FIT file for that activity. And indicate whether AutoPause was on or off.

  • ...For greater clarity, if AutoPause is disabled, then the average speed should be based on the total overall time, which includes any time when you're not moving.

If AutoPause is enabled, then the timer will stop when you're not moving. If you have a lot of rest periods, this will result in a much higher average speed.

  • Hi Kyle J,

Average speed is a simple metric. Ride 30k in 1 hr. Average speed 30kph. In this scenario my average speed would be 35kph (I don't know why) i can check against my FR 245 also and its reading about 5kph over (even when both are set to 1 sec reading and autopause is on). I'm gonna take two reading tomorrow and get good data (not manual turn offs) and I will report. Thanks though I appreciate your input.

  • Are using are an external speed sensor?

  • If Auto-Pause was on, then yes the average speed will read higher if there were any pauses. It is essentially the Moving Average Speed.

The average speed is based on the recording time, which is reduced by any pauses, whether manual or Auto-Pause.

It is not based on the total elapsed time, which is the time between the first Start and the last Stop of the activity. If this is the average speed that you want, then disable Auto-Pause, and don't manually stop the recording during the activity.

Also for greater accuracy be sure to use a speed sensor. Without one the Edge will use the GPS, which isn't as accurate.

  • My guess would be that you are using an external speed sensor and that wheel circumference is not correct.

Strava does not use the speed and distance data provided by the Edge, but recomputes it using the GPS position data.

This could allow the values to differ.

  • Moving speed and average speed are also very easy to check against. That's not the case either. I might have to buy a speedsensor or return i think.

I'm gonna revise the settings on GPS and use smart record to see does that make a difference today.
