Maps don't have routable roads in this area

Hi guys,

I try to ride a route in the Eifel region, Germany. But my edge 530 device comes up with the notification: maps don't have routable roads in this area, when I start the route.

Software version is 9.75. I have the basemap, central europe, DEM europe, east and west Europe maps installed and activated.

I try to ride route J which I downloaded from the official Eifel website. https://www.freifahrt-eifel.de/en/routes-dueren/routedetails/am-seeufer-nl

In the settings of the route itself it says on the device: route calculation, not in cache.

Anybody a clue how I can fix this?

Go here: https://extract.bbbike.org/

Download the area you want in one of the Latin Garmin formats. The UTF versions won't work.

Put the downloaded map in the \Garmin\ folder on your unit. Make sure it is enabled in in the settings. Disable any overlapping Garmin maps to prevent confusion.

Does it work now?

If it doesn't then I would be checking OpenStreetMap to see if the roads/paths the route follows are there.

Update: I seemed to be able to fix the problem myself. While in Germany I only had my phone with me. So I synchronized the 530 with the Garmin Connect app on my phone in the hope this would install necessary updates. But apparently it didn’t.

As soon as I got access to my laptop I hooked the Garmin with a cable to the laptop and went to the Garmin Connect page and make connection with the Garmin device. Clearly this solved the problem. After a restart everything works fine again. No idea what has changed but as long as it works it’s fine for me.

So lesson learned for me. Always check if every route works on your device before leaving home or take a laptop with me.

You can't update maps with the phone app. You need to use Garmin Express on a computer. That is most likely why things worked after updating connected to a computer.
