No resistance change on smart trainer when following course

Hi all

Apologies in advance if this issue has been addressed previously but I've been unable to locate anything of relevance using the search function.

I have a Jet Black Volt smart trainer which in addition to using 3rd party apps such as Rouvy etc, I'd like to utilise in following a course I've ridden outdoors. The display shows the map, my position on it, and the gradient map and this is all accurate. However, the gradient is not simulated on my trainer, as in the resistance doesn't change at all.

I have no similar issue in terms of resistance when using Rouvy etc.

Has anyone else experienced this or may be able to provide a solution?

Thank you.

    hi,

guess the only part Garmin plays in the setup is the workout source from an outdoors ride containing logged power, or am I missing something ?

  • Yeah that sounds about right. I’ve followed the instructions for following a saved course and it says “the trainer increases or decreases resistance based on the elevation information in the course or ride”. I’m not getting any resistance changes.

and you are not using the workout on the edge to control the smart trainer

must be a hickup between rouvy and the Garmin source

  • Seems to have resolved itself following a recalibration. Thanks for the help.

  • Hi, I am having this same issue and becoming very frustrating with very little help! No resistance when following courses on my Edge 530 with my wahoo kickr core. Elevation/grade/mapping/speed/power/cadence are all correct. Any help? I have recalibrate the wahoo kickr (spin down) but this action is not required any more since the firmware update. Thanks, Ray

  • Same issue here, edge looses sensors signals and reconnects, and suddenly stops controlling grade.

  • The issue continues on the x40 devices. Connections via BlueTooth to phone/computer apps work but connections to Garmin edge devices via ANT+ fail frequently and cause either no resistance (x30 Garmins) or no change in resistance from the failure point (x40 Garmins). Seems to happen with a range of smart trainers, the edge devices being the common factor. Garmin have mostly shown no interest. On my older 530 the edge has to be powered off to restore a connection and on my 1040 it is “enough” to just disable / re-enable the trainer on the 1040 but still interrupts the training. I disable / turn off all other transmitting devices under my control in the location but the failures persist. Makes trying to use the edge devices to train / follow a course pointless.

  • Have you got a rubber case around the Garmin? I'm sure it's not that but I'm clutching at straws trying to work out why mine's doing it (Edge 1030 Plus with Wahoo Kickr). Sometimes powering the Garmin off and on again makes it work, but today for the first time it happened mid-ride after I took a break of 2 minutes. Got pedaling again and noticed I was doing 20 MPH up a 9% hill... if only.

  • I do have a rubber casing to protect the Edge, but the only fix so far is placing the Edge besides the wahoo trainer, and no drops  so far.

My wifes Edge it frecuently disconnects onroad.

I dont think its the rubber hoiusing, I think its the USB/Ant chip, failing or not strong enough to receive/send data...

Garmin support was  none, evrytime I called customer service, they only offered to add me to a list in case a fix is discovered...
