Using Garmin 530 in NZ

I will be traveling to New Zealand and want to use my 530 to record my routes while I'm there. I do not need any mapping as traveling with friends, just want to know distance, speed etc. Will this work in the same way it does in UK?

Yes. Recording activities has nothing to do with maps.
