Re-finding the route after missing a turn?

I am generally happy with many things on my Edge 530, but one thing is turning into a really big issue that makes me consider to dump the device.

Suppose I am on a route, and then at one point I miss a turn. The Edge will alert me that I have gone off route, and then either suggests that I take a U-turn, or I ride on along an alternative route. In most cases, this means it wants to send me back to where I left the original route. There are multiple problems with this:

1. if the original deviation resulted from a road block, then there is no sense to returning. In such a case, I need an alternative route that brings me back on track further along the original route than the deviation.

2. suppose there is no road block, so it actually makes sense to return to the original deviation. Then the Edge will generally not be able to tell when I have returned, and am able to resume the original route. For example, yesterday, I returned to my original deviation, and took the correct turn instead of the erroneous one I had taken earlier. But the Edge did not recognize this, and it kept telling me that I was off route. I had to ride about 500m for it to be able to tell me I was on track again. But along those 500m, there were several decisions to be made on left/right/straight ahead, and without the navigational help, all of those were complete gambles. No route is being indicated on the display, only the constant message about being off route, and the U turn to get back.

This cost me about 30 min yesterday, as I was in unknown territory. That makes the unit completely useless in such situations.

So a couple of questions:

* Am I overlooking some setting that would help in solving this problem? For example, is there a way to keep the original route on screen no matter how wrong I go?

* Are any of the other Garmin units any better in this respect? For example, is the new Edge Explore a better navigator in this respect? Perhaps even a non-Garmin unit?

* Any other ideas or experiences on all this?

  • First of all i would recommend no using the route recalculation function on a x30 unit as that won't do what you think.

Next, If you go off route and get yourself back on route these units usually notice pretty quickly but sometimes they don't as you have seen.  There isn't anything you can do about it. In these situations I would switch to the map page where you will see your course (the magenta line) and you can easily see if you are on track and if there are any turns until the unit catches up.

I have had this happen sometimes on my 830.

All units from the 1030+ onwards have improved re routing if you go off course.
