Does anyone know the "range" of Auto Brightness?

So, in other words, if I manually set the brightness to "70%", when I switch back to Auto Brightness, does this affect the maximum that Auto Brightness will achieve?  In other words, is it a sort of gain adjustment?  I'm finding Auto Brightness too dim when the sun is more in front of me, lower in the sky.  I find myself turning to manual brightness, turning it up to 70%, but once I return to the shade it could be allowed to auto adjust lower.

Just hoping there's a way to use Auto Brightness but have it brighter than it will achieve on it's own.  A hidden "gain" adjustment.

I'm pretty sure the answer is "No", but figure I'd ask.  I suspect Auto Brightness is independent of what I have last chosen as a manual setting.

  • The owner’s manual states:

Select Menu > Settings > System > Display

Auto Brightness: Automatically adjusts the backlight brightness based on the ambient light.

Which in my experience is what I find happens. The sensor is not always in the best position regarding bright sunlight or in an underpass for example, it’s the best that can be expected from a small device. Manually adjusting the brightness levels has no impact whatsoever on the auto brightness setting. You choose one or the other.

  • Thanks, as I said, that has been my belief of how it worked.  I was just hoping I'd misunderstood and that there was a gain adjustment like the 540/840 has.  I like the idea of auto brightness, but I'd like to have it biased brighter.  I guess that's another reason to consider a newer unit one day.

  • Yes, I agree it would be a good feature to have, especially as many folk wear sunglasses while riding.

Perhaps it may be included in a future firmware update, who knows

  • We could submit the idea of auto brightness based upon a set starting point here:
