Do I NEED the European map on the 530?

I am using a Garmin Edge 530 with these maps installed - Routable Cycle Map of North America 2022.20 and Trailforks 2019.10. We are planing a self-supported tour in the Netherlands. Do I need to get the European maps for a base map? Please note that I am not asking how to do that nor the process for uninstalling the present maps and installing the European map. I am wondering if the installed maps are sufficient for routing in the Netherlands. We are otherwise creating mapped routes in Ride with GPS and downloading those to the Garmin.

You have the "Routable Cycle Map of North America".

You'd need some form of routable map for the area you are riding in the Netherlands.

Note that you can get free maps that will work for you. You can also create a map for just the region you need, which means the file is much smaller. Which means you might not need to uninstall the NA map from your 530.

Select one of the "Latin" Garmin versions from here ("Unicode" won't work).

The Edges come with what Garmin calls a "world basemap" but that does not have much detail and doesn't work for routing (this basemap is used to display something where there isn't detailed/routable map coverage).

  • Thank you. I will take a crack at creating a small regional map and perhaps it will fit. I appreciate the help.
