Garmin Komoot integration not working well

I have bought my 530 because of the Komoot integration. I took my 530 for a ride yesterday but have never had to stop so many times because the 530 says I was going the wrong direction. After checking on my phone (opened the komoot app and checking the route) I saw I was going the correct direction.

I have one example of this which I wanted to show. On the first image, my garmin tells me to make a u-turn (after crossing the road, see 2nd picture. the cycle path is on the right on the image, not visible). Cross the road again and then go left (where I easily could go right immediately). I check with komoot again and there the route is shown perfectly (3rd image showing the route without crossing the road but going right directly).

Why does the 530 "adds" these strange things to the route?

I annoyed me so much. I have done rides with Komoot directly from my iphone (wich voice instructions) which worked perfectly and decided to go for a gps device with Komoot so I did not have to use my iphone and do not have to wear my in-ear headphones, but so far, the experience has been dissapointing (and going for better wireless in-ear headphones for komoot navigation would have been a much cheaper and better option).

Anyone an idea what the problem is with this?

  • Have you created a route on Komoot and saved as a .gpx-file and imported it inot Connect and synched it to your Edge? Or what exactly do you mean by Komoot integration?

  • Erratic behaviour can occur if the route author has placed control points directly in intersections when creating the route. Placing points some distance before and after a turn and letting the software exactly where it should be is better.

Can you eliminate this as a cause?

Also make sure that only one routable map is enabled in your Activity Profile.

  • The edge 530 has the option to download the komoot app on your edge device (connect IQ) > app

i authorized my edge 530 to my komoot account and then I have the option to navigate each tour I have planned on Komoot.

    Edge 530 Screenshot

So, I created the route in Komoot (was an already existing route I had on Komoot which I altered a bit).

I choose from the top option (geplande tours (means: planned tours) and chose: navigate.

No need for exporting a gpx and importing it to Garmin Connect.

  • I cannot eliminate that at this moment. I changed the original route some hours ago in Komoot for some other time.

I am not sure if can get the original route back. Will check that with Komoot to find out. On the 3rd image, the komoot app screen is visible. And just before the turn, there is a waypoint (black circle with white 9 in it). I cannot zoom in enough to see the exact location of this waypoint, although I suspect it to be before the road.

edit: I did discover that the waypoints in Komoot need to be placed very precise, but that specific waypoint in this cause did not have that issue. Komoot has a system of identifying waypoints that need attention. the red dots in the image below are waypoints that need attention because they are not placed logically on the route. E.g. In a field next to a cycle path. After you place then at a logical spot, they change into black dots.

  • Understood. I'm doing it a little bit different. Instead of using the Komoot-App I'm synchronizing my routes from Komoot to Connect (there is a setting in Komoot where you can enable that). After saving the route is automatically synchonized and can be sent to your Edge.

That eliminates for me the need to use the Komoot-App and the potential problematic behaviour there.

But of course there is one addtional step i.e. sending the route from Connect to the Edge.

  • I tried again today. Did 2 things different, so can't tell which one (or maybe both) made the difference but navigation went well today.

Used your methode (I already had Garmin Connect enabled in komoot from 2 years ago). I synced to my edge using Garmin Express and started navigating in my edge 530 at "navigate". But also checked every waypoint in komoot and found some were placed unlogical. Changed that and every went well today.

Will try the komoot app at the edge 530 some other day to see if that goes well too now I have corrected the waypoints.

  • Try to go into Garmin Connect mobile, Courses, look for the Komoot one, open it, then chose "Duplicate". Garmin then created it's own route and send that to the device. Maybe it will work?
