Constant sensor dropouts on 9.73

Updated to 9.73 on my 530 and am now suffering constant dropouts from both Garmin dual heart rate and Assioma pedals and both connected via Bluetooth whilst training indoors. Completely unusable as a training tool at this point. So frustrating!

  • Same. An hour ride had 11 hr dropouts for me. I just rolled back to 9.10 (last "stable" version)

Pretty sure this is an unfixable thing.

  • Interestingly I rode today with exactly the same setup and had zero connectivity / dropout problems. Wondering whether there was radio interference yesterday (albeit that didn't affect the connection of the HR to my Apple TV/Zwift.

  • I have had this issue for the last 3 firmware releases at least. It only happens when the head unit is connected to my phone. If I disconnect the phone from the head unit, then I get no dropouts. This stop the live features, but is the only way I can make this 530 functional.

  • Checking in to say the same thing!

I've not used my 530 in a while (months) but finally got back on the turbo and had constant dropouts from both the turbo (Elite Direto) and my HR monitor (Wahoo Tickr) connected on Ant+. My history trace looks just like the OPs.

The devices were also connected to my Fenix as well as Rouvy through my Apple TV and those two were fine so the issue seems to be limited to the 530 only at the moment.

I cleared all sensors, performed a rest and configured the unit again and still having issues.

I'll try with my phone disconnected to see if I can add to the troubleshooting.  This will work for me on the turbo, but not ideal when out on the road.
To disconnect the phone, do you recommend doing this via the 530 itself or it turning bluetooth off on my phone enough?

  • I just disconnected by quitting the Garmin app on my iPhone. I didn’t need to deregister the 530.

  • Firmware 9.73 on my Edge 530.
    Here's my exercise from yesterday!

Power and Speed from my Direto on Ant+, HR from my Tickr on Bluetooth.

At 3 minutes in I turned off BT on my phone.  At 5 minutes in I went into my Garmin and turned off phone connection.  No change.  At 37 minutes I turned phone connection back on.

Same sensors into my AppleTV gave a perfectly good exercise when recorded on Rouvy and pushed into Strava so I'm ruling out the sensors themselves and the issue looks like the 530.

While I can get in exercise data from Rouvy I like looking at the head unit, recording the data for performance tracking and the constant beeping of drop and reconnect drives me crazy!

  • Just for reference - my Fenix 5 is even worse when connected to the trainer.  However HR seems very solid.  Strange.

Perhaps it's linked to Ant+ only since AppleTV was rock solid again and that's on BT.  I need to contact Elite to see what they say, as it could be Ant+ on the trainer that's out rather than on two Garmin devices.

  • Looking at the above data I narrowed it down to Ant+ causing the most problems.  Some reading indicated that if could be 2.4GHz interference.  There is a WiFi AP in the new training room so I changed the channel from 11 to 1 and gave it another shot.  Only had a few minutes but got a solid link with no drops from the turbo.

This would make sense as I only experienced it in the new room - I was in the cellar before which had very poor WiFi.

Needs more testing but this is something for others to try - check your WiFi channel and set it to 6 or 1 if possible.  I'll update after a proper longer session and see what's what.

  • Well time to apologise to Garmin but add to the discussion.  Changing channels on the AP to 1 seems to have done the trick - solid workout tonight.  Now I just need to work out which setting to change so the Garmin doesn't think I'm able to average 79.5Mph!

  • Same issue for me. First outdoor ride following 9.73 firmware upgrade and all my sensors; Varia, HR monitor and Assioma pedals kept going on and off. Clearly the issue relates to the firmware update. Any thoughts and suggestions to resolve would be appreciated! Thanks!
