How To Utilize/View GPS & Stat Functions 'Without' Starting a Workout?

Is there a way to view progressive stats and watch GPS tracking without actually starting a workout?

I really don't want to have to start a workout every time I jump on my bike in order to get rid of the big blue flashing arrow.

Yes... I have checked the manual, searched google and this forum.

What can I say, I got learning difficulties.

TIA for those whom are able to help.

    Thank you.

  • As says, @PeterK_55 already completely answered this in the other thread:

"The flashing arrow is a prompt to start recording an activity. It can be turned off by changing the timer start mode from prompted to manual in Settings>[your activity profile]>Timer start mode.

Basic things like speed and position on the map are available without recording an activity but there won’t be a record of distance or path traveled."

Follow the first bolded paragraph above to stop the "blue flashing arrow" from appearing.  You'll never see it again if you do this.

To further expound on the second paragraph, press the "Top Right" button (7 in manual) to get to activity selection, scroll down to desired type of activity (Mountain, Road, etc.) using the "Left Side, bottom buttons" (2 and 3 in manual) then push "Top Right" button (7) again to select this activity type.  This does not start a "Ride", it simply puts you into the data screens.  At this point you can scroll through and see speed, map location, etc. without starting a ride.

Additionally, as mentions, you can still start a "Ride" from any point once into the data screens by pushing the "Bottom, Right" button (5 in the manual) and you get to see accumulated data such as miles and elevation climbed.  You can't see accumulated data unless you've told the device you've started to do something.  This is not a "Workout" it is a "Ride", and you can decide to save it or delete when you complete said "Ride", or at any point along the way by pushing Button 5 again.  Pushing Button 5 stops a ride once started, but does not save it.  Follow on screen instructions to save or resume or delete.

Note:  Top Right button 7 is always used to confirm a selection.  You haven't made a selection unless you push this button after highlighting the selection.

I'm sorry if this is painfully long, but it seems the OP is missing some step, so I tried spell them all out...

  • It really has been answered, several times.

Slow down and understand every step outlined.  Ask a specific question if a step isn't working.

  • As Cristox no admits ... the answer is NO.  Please read the title of thread.

It's a fact now ... You cannot stop the big blue flashing arrow unless you start a workout.

This is a deal breaker as I have to push more than one button with one being up to fifteen times to get to the discard workout.

Is what it is ... next time I suggest you do the same ... slow down and read the questions and answer the specifics.

NO ... you can't get rid of the blue arrow WITHOUT STARTING A WORKING and in the case of the EDGE 530 pressing a hundred buttons to discard a workout.

This is a restrictive practice on a retraicvie device.

100% deal breaker and something I'll be warning others about when it comes to this device.

    100% buyers remorse.

  • Your OK Cranky K ... unlike Cristox ... you did not simply tell me to READ THE *&^%ING MANUAL.  Talking like that has a way or derailing threads.  I'm reading you better now.  Thank you.

  • He wasn't abusive, he was making a valid point. You still haven't really read the manual, because you are still using the wrong terms.  "Workouts" are a step beyond "Rides".  I've recorded every "Ride", but I've never done a "Workout".

A Workout is special version of a Ride that you don't ever need to use.  A Workout is more complicated, it is a pre-determined set of instructions you are going to follow for training.

At least read this page, it details starting a "Ride" which does not involve a Workout.  "Going for a Ride": https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge530/EN-US/GUID-17D216E2-E185-4D38-A17B-2762EF196554.html  This is the manual's version of what I described above.

This is just a few easy button pushes to start a Ride.  And you never have to see the Blue Flashing Arrow again if you change the settings just once.  If you start a Ride, you will momentarily see a Green Arrow, which confirms the ride has started.

  • RIGHTO ... SOLVED!

Regardless of claims of an answer already being answered in another thread ... The issue was due troll like responses derailing my thinking.  I understand how forum clicks work so is OK that you feel the need to defend.

Thanks for persisting and the detailed response in here.

I'll always call you trolls for the way the thrive on diminishing others regardless of their fame or status.

Next time don't be so quick to demean others with those abbreviated responses that do more harm than good.

Until next time ... laughs out loud.

    I'll be back!

  • You may find a diminished pool of people willing to help you.  You're the only one that's done any name calling.  was truly trying to help and continued to do so through all the noise.

I went to great lengths to help with a lot of typing and referencing specific areas of the manual, and yet you even cast shade on me in earlier posts.  I'm done now too, I wish you well.
