Incorrect elevation gain

I have tied all the suggested solutions ?clear ports and update software) but Garmin 530 consistently under-reads elevation gain. Today, reported number was less than 50% of verified elevation gain.

Hi, how big of an elevation gain are we talking here?

On map the route had 2200m of climb but Garmin said just under 900m.

Looks like Garmin support beat me to it ;) In addition to suggesting you contact them, I was going to say that my understanding is that the elevation data comes from a barometric altimeter, which can drift because of changes in air temperature and pressure (weather) and the amount of time. 1300 m still sounds like a lot though! (I think I've seen 100 m or so at most.) If the device does this regularly though then It may suggest a problem with it. In either case, contacting Garmin support is probably best.
