Device keeps switching between mass storage and regular when connected to PC USB

I have a Garmin Edge 530 firmware 9.50.  I connected it to my PC and Garmin Express to update maps.  I noticed that the Edge device switches back and forth between regular mode (booted up) and Mass Storage mode.  I'm not sure if it takes a specific amount of time, or if there is some tasks that is causing this.

I tried holding the lap button to force Mass Storage mode, and then hooking the device to my PC.  Seemed to work.  Connected Garmin Express and seemed to work fine for a few minutes (less than 5).  Closed Garmin Express and left the device connected and it automatically switched back into normal booted up mode.

The problem is that during a map update earlier, the edge switched modes half-way through.  I had to disconnect and reconnect the USB cord, and it continued, but worried that if I had gotten farther into the update, it would have caused corruption.

Is there some kind of timeout on Mass Storage mode?

I tried different USB cables and different USB Ports.

  • Perhaps it is another bug of 9.50 version. Install 9.10

    1. Are you using a Garmin branded cable?
    2. Is your PC going to sleep during the map update? Check your computers power and sleep settings.
    3. Have you tried this on a different computer with the same results?

  • 1. No idea.  It's been a long time since I got my GPS, and have moved houses since then.   I did try 3 different micro-usb cables.

    2. no.  I was sitting in front of the computer watching the update.

    3. I didn't try another computer, but I can.

  • Ok... so this isn't a Garmin issue.  It's an issue with my PC and/or Windows 11 settings.  Default settings for my PC is to go to sleep after 5 minutes.

I was using Remote Desktop (RDP) to get to my PC that the Garmin Edge 530 was physically connected to.

The PC was going to sleep after 5 minutes, although I couldn't tell because the RDP session was staying active.   I could actually work on the PC even when it was in a semi-sleep state.  When it went into this sleep/semisleep state, the USB port was disconnecting, causing the Edge 530 to Boot, because the USB port was disconnected.

I would disconnect the USB cable and reconnect, but with the PC in this state, the USB port would disconnect again after less than 5 minutes, because the PC was still in some kind of semi-sleep state, even though I was connected via RDP.  The laptop screen would be blank/timed out.

The behavior was similar but different when physicially using the laptop rather than RDP.   I could see the USB port disconnect after 5 minutes when the PC went to sleep.  The difference is that if I wake the PC up, because I was actively using the PC, I wouldn't have the issue.  So it wasn't timing out.

Changing the settings on the USB ports to not allow them to go to sleep, didn't seem to change anything.  I could adjust my sleep setting, but now that I know what is happening I think I'm fine.

Anyway...  Summary..   Using RDP to get to a PC that has Garmin Express/GPS connected can timeout your USB ports without you knowing it.  Don't use RDP.
