Multiple issues with Edge 530

Just got the Edge 530 today. Such a frustrating experience I may send it back and leave Garmin completely.

1. I unboxed it and linked it to my phone via Connect. This worked.

2. I then tried to add Trailforks to it and it never got past the queue. I tried various other apps and they all loaded onto the phone right away. This is a huge deal since the main reason I even got navigation was to use Trailforks. Literally a dealbreaker.

3. I tried over and over and looked at troubleshooting guides and nothing helped.

4. I removed my Forerunner from my list of devices thinking that possibly the two devices were causing some sort of incompatibility problem. It didn’t help.

5. I deleted the IQ app and reinstalled it several times, this never worked.

6. Out of desperation I did a reset on the 530 and deleted the Connect app off the phone. I reinstalled the app and tried to connect the 530 that was now at factory settings. Much to my dismay, I can’t even connect them anymore. Sure the phone detects it but never gets as far as displaying the code to finalize it. Yes I’m in pairing mode.

Of course I’ve powered it off and restarted it a few times. Same with my phone. Nothing. This is beyond frustrating.

It’s visibly  not damaged, everything seems brand new, it just isn’t working. I honestly don’t have the time to troubleshoot this much longer.

Help

  • I'd suggest first connecting to Garmin Express to make sure maps and firmware up to date.

I did have some problems when setting up a connection to a new phone and had to go through the following steps to get it going:

On the Edge, forget the phone Bluetooth connection.

On the phone, forget the Edge.

In the GC App, remove the Edge as a device.

Delete the App from the phone.

    Reboot the phone.

    Install the GC App.

Start the pairing process again from the Edge, not from the phone, as per the Garmin Instructions.

    Pairing Your Smartphone

The above steps are for the worst case, not all may be needed.

Take a look here for the Trailforks setup.

  • I think Trailforks is native to the 530, nothing additional needed?

  • Trailforks has to be installed.

"Step 1: Download and Install the Trailforks Connect IQ App"

  • Remove the 530 from the list of devices in your phone's Bluetooth settings before you try to re-pair it.

  • That's a generic support page so it makes sense to start the instructions there with install the app.  I thought I remember that it came pre-installed in the Edge 530, part of the mountain bike bundle.  Forksight is a native feature on the 530 that works with Trailforks basemap.  I see that Trailforks app is on my 530, so it got there somehow.  Possibly I downloaded it, but I don't use it and don't remember.  I just confirmed that I can use the phone app to push a route to my Edge though.

    Garmin Edge Integration

    This is the best experience!

Trailforks partnered with Garmin to integrate Trailforks data into a custom MTB map & features on select Garmin Edge devices.

The Garmin Edge 530, Edge 830 and Edge 1030 Plus offer the integrated Trailforks features.

    • These Edge devices include a custom Garmin basemap with routable worldwide MTB trail data. Trailforks POIs are also included.
    • Trail search from the Garmin menu, to find a trail on device.
    • Forksight mode - automatically displays upcoming forks in the trail and gives you context by showing where you are within a trail network.

These devices also come with the Trailforks Connect IQ app re-installed.

  • So I think it’s going to work.

Definitely removing the Edge from my phone’s Bluetooth list allowed me to pair it all up again.

Once it was paired, I added IQ back to my apps. Once that connected, it actually automatically put Trailforks and RWGPS on since they were in the queue. So basically what needed done was to delete everything and put it back on. Still frustrated that it was such a pain.

Not sure yet how functional it all will be, since I haven’t actually been on a ride yet. Later today.

I haven’t tried to put my watch back onto Connect, hopefully it works. Not a huge deal since it was my riding watch and the Edge ought to totally replace it.
