Turn by turn navigation in courses

I have setup several courses and copied to my Edge 530. I am not getting turn by turn navigation but can follow the course on the map page. However, after a few minutes the Edge 530 device beeps a few times and I get a map page with Time to Point in the bottom right corner. Once the time counts down to 0 the device beeps again and gives me a new Time to Point with say 5 or 10 seconds. If I backout of this Time to Point page, the device beeps and returns to this page after a few seconds. This makes navigation impossible as the constant beeping drives me crazy. Note that I have used Strava, RideWithGPS and Garmin Connect to export courses to the device. I have let the course sync automatically and also copied to the device manually. I have also exported GPX and TCX and also had the same issue. This is the first time that I am trying course navigation on the Edge 530 so I do not know if it has ever worked. Any help with turn by turn navigation and using courses is very much appreciated.

  • It sounds like the problem Captain Mike had in this (kind of confusing) thread:

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1030-plus/309567/map-page-keeps-popping-up

Garmin recommended he reload/reinstall the maps and doing that appeared to fix the problem.

  • Thank you. I will try those suggestions and see if it helps.

  • Hi dpawlyk,

You mention reload / reinstall the maps. Do you mean Disable / Enable the maps? I did not see another option on the 530. I have reenabled all the maps on the device (I have the default 4 maps). I rode a course today and had the same issue. I just want to clarify that the device is not switching to my map screen. Rather it is switching to a screen showing the map, Heading and Time to Point. Odd thing is that whilst riding the course I am not getting TBT directions. So, it is strange that I am getting this map screen with white arrows to tell me to go straight.

Another thing is that I am not getting an off course message prior to the device switching to this map screen. Today after a few minutes, the issue corrected itself and the map stopped popping up. I managed to ride on the course for about 30km. I suspect that there is some discrepancy between the actual road location and the garmin map.

I have turned off tones on the device. This makes the map screen pop-up less annoying.

  • No, not disabling/enabling the maps.

It’s recopying the maps (what happens when there is a map update).

You should see discrepancies between the actual road and the map. If you recall were, provide a link to it (using Google maps).

  • You mention reload / reinstall the maps

In Garmin Express (on PC or Mac) with your 530 connected via USB

    Select "Map Details"

    Select "Map Options"

    Select "Reinstall Map"

The assumption is that your map is / has become corrupted and reinstalling should sort it out, hopefully

  • Thank you for your help. I realised that I did not have the correct base map installed. I bought my device on a UK website and I am living in Canada. Therefore I did not have the base map for my area. Once I installed this the routing worked perfectly.

  • "base map" in Garmin-land refers to a world-wide map without detail.

What you were missing was a detailed map that covered your area.

  • You are correct. I was missing the detailed map. Thank you for your help.
